wondering where does the electric fan on a 1997 jeep get its info to turn, is it from the coolant temp sensor on the thermostat housing? because I believe mine is going bad, I replaced the thermostat just because its cheap to see if it would kick the fans on, but I got nothing jeeps temp sits around 210 but I have never heard the fans come on. only when I use AC settings or defroster. Heat is working fine as well. Also would the motor getting over 210 cause a check engine light to come on? happened to me when I was sitting at idle at a stop light. I'm no mechanic but it seems to me that sensor isn't working or is working on and off and inaccurate info just looking for either a second opinion or a better lead.

Seems I heard the electric fan don't kick in until 217-218 so maybe yours hasn't got warm enough. I know mine has run 2 or 3 times ever.

I guess I wont worry then. seems replacing the thermostat did help with the overheating problem it was having. Ill have to get the code scanned and see what it says almost sure it's that sensor though

Def get the code scanned and yea the fan won't kick on until between like 215-220 give or take. Post code results when you get them scanned

Hey I am a bit of a newbie here lol, so bare with me. I recently got my second Jeep Cherokee and I seem to be having some problems, or at least I think I do. First, my new Jeep is a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport automatic with a np242. My first one was a 2dr 1998 Jeep Cherokee sport automatic with a np232 which I very sadly was forced to part with... long story.
But to get back to the point my New Jeep seems to have a problem changing gears while in four wheel drive and sometimes doesn't even seem like it kicks in. Whenever I put it in part-time it seems to never work and when in full-time if I change gears it makes a loud "SLAM!" and clunk almost jerking the Jeep forward. The first time this happened it scared the **** out of me. I thought the friggin tranny busted off or something! So, is that normal for a np242? because I don't know since my first was a np231 and IT never gave me any problems. Right now I am trying only to use 2wd. So, tell me what you think. thanks

The check engine light went away...then later that night i got another one, scanned it and it was a misfire on cylinder 2? seems completely unrelated.

and I just checked the plugs and wires guess ill clear the code and see if it comes back.

Ok, so I am a total newb when it comes to Jeeps. I purchased a 1986 Cherokee Laredo. It is a 2 door 4 wheel drive that was supposed to have a 4 cylinder engine in it. Started having fuel pump problems a few days after I brought it home and found out that it is a 6 cylinder engine actually in the vehicle. I can put in a new fuel pump, drive it for 1 day, and the fuel pump blows. There are no surges that we can find causing this issue. All of the wiring on the underside of the car keeps burning up due to the wires not being replaced when the engine was put in (or so I am told). My mechanic has suggested a new wiring harness would fix the problem. My problem now is that I cannot find a wiring harness anywhere. I have called multiple Jeep dealers and have been told if I can supply the part number they can order the part, but they do't have the time to look for the number themselves. I am not entirely sure what part I should be looking for (when I type in wiring harness I get ALL kinds of stuff) or even if this will fix the problem at all. I would love some input!

1. I have a 2000 XJ with the coil-on-plug set up. I want to give it a good tune up but I am not too familiar with COP setups. I bought some good plugs, but is there any need to change the plug boots or other parts I should know about?

2. My XJ auto trans shifts up and down beautifully through the low gears (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) but once it is in its top gear you really have to bury the accelerator to get it to down shift, especially in hilly terrain. Is this normal or is something not right?

If the wiring is melting I'd say you have a short or some other electrical problem.

In the summer I am doing the intake swap. My question is are the fuel rails the same on the old style as on the 99+,because the one on the 99 intake that I have is pretty shot. So I want to know if I can take the one from my 97 and use it on my 99.

I'm not following, it might just be me, but the way you worded this is seems contradicting. So your rig upshifts fine to top gear, is it a problem with shifting back down that you having as you slow down?

At highway speeds when he mashes the gas to accelerate it doesnt downshift to a lower gear as it should.
