My 2000 has the 8.25 back and Dana 30 up front. So are all Dana 30's 27 spline? Looking at getting a locker for the front and this bit of info seems to be important

thanks for any info you guys can come up with. To be more specific about the problem: my typical drive to and from work has one section of road that is straight down then straight back up out of a valley (~1 mile on each side). Going down the hill everything is normal getting to speeds around 60mph, but when going back up the other side, if I just slowly push the accelerator down to keep speed up it wont down shift it just keeps slowing down until the RPMs drop just below a thousand. Needless to say by then I am only going 35 or 40mph. I can get it to downshift by putting it almost to the floorboard quickly though.

My 88 used to do That. I think its normal and nothing to worry about. I used to Just push the pedal down quickly and make it downshift at the bottom of hills. The converter didn't wanna come unlocked in other words an it takes almost flooring it do get the converter to unlock and downshift to 3rd or 2nd.

I pressing you in D when you doin all this. Next time try to shift to 2nd or 3rd on your way back up the hill. When you go to 3 position on your shift stick it will stay in 3rd gear and below so if your problem is above 3rd you might be ok for now. Oh question when you driving on straight roads do you BBQ this problem lime if you try to overtAke another car and go around them on highway

This thread is a good idea, and it's perfect for the question I have to ask, which is this:
What can i expect from a Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 engine and an automatic? I'm seriously considering a 1996 I have found. I see them EVERYWHERE, and usually that means parts are cheaper, aftermarket is bigger, and should I need something for it from a junkyard, there will be another one there.
I'm wondering, on average, are these dependable vehicles? Does it have an iron cylinder head, or an aluminum one? Will it eat head gaskets? Are the transmissions durable? What BIG obvious issues would I not see, not being an Expert on Cherokees?
I ask you all this, because of two things... First, I've learned that to learn about a vehicle, find an online forum.
Second, I don't want another vehicle to turn out like... The one I bought for my wife last August. We have a 1988 Isuzu Trooper. It is my first 4x4, and I have to admit, it is a truly amazing off-road machine. No lift, no lockers, and 31's, it will claw it's way over anything you drive it at, and will conquer the incredible snow we had recently. BUT. It blows head gaskets at the slightest change in heat. It's 2.6 liter 4 banger has no power to speak of, at least in something that heavy. Have to adjust the valves every 15k miles, which isn't THAT hard really. The fuel injection is controlled by vacuum, the phase of the moon, and black magic. And the A340H auto transmission is made of sunbeams, hope, and fairy dust.
A last question - the 4.0 High Output engine looks suspiciously similar to the 258 straight six that my mom's car (1982 AMC Concord) had when I was a kid. Are they based on the same engine? I remember that being a bit too much motor for that little car, but being smooth, quiet, and reliable.
Sorry to write a book, Hope you guys and gals can give me some good news!

PO302-What I've tried
Okay this Jeep is new to me.
I had a mechanic change the radiator, distributor, coil pack and put on a new head set.
25 miles later, I get a light(PO302)
I changed the cap, rotor, wires, plugs, oil, oil filter, air filter and put in some gumout.
The light actually went off by itself until I got to a 1/4 tank of gas, then it came on again(I felt like the going off on its own was a fluke) and then it started running rough.
I filled the tank and it felt better, but again at a 1/4 tank of gas, it started running rough again and the code is still there( I reset it and it comes back in 5 miles or so)
Now, according to the forum, I should re-gap the plugs, check the wires again, I have some seafoam and more high octane fuel system cleaner.
What else? Should I question the mechanic's ignition coil?
I got this Jeep to play with and still haven't gotten to the budget that I set for it. I'm having fun with it and I know it will be a great toy when I get it done, but this little thing is a nuisance. Thanks in advance.
