Seems like the connector for the TCU had some issues. Have you ever refreshed the NSS connectors? Had to have them apart, at least one of them, to re-do the NSS.
They can get rather grungy inside.
Cruiser’s Trans Plug Refreshing
Over near the transmission dipstick tube are 2 rather large connectors. One is black and the other gray. These 2 connectors carry all the info between TPS, TCU, NSS, speed sensor, and transmission solenoids.
Unplug each one, visually inspect for corrosion or bent pins, spray them out with electrical contact cleaner and plug them back in.
Additionally, if your Jeep is an 87 to 90 Renix, it’s always a good idea to reach up under the glovebox area and unplug the connector to the TCU and spray it out along with the receptacle of the TCU. While you’re there, find the fuse right in that area for the TCU. Remove it and spray out it’s receptacle and clean any corrosion from the fuse.

mine jumped all over the place like you described. 2nd, 3rd....I'd floor it and it would down shift, then when I let off it would start hunting again. You can test it if you have an ohm meter. Just a thought.

So I've been driving my 1991 xj, automatic, for about a year now, and in the last month it has started having a hard time starting. When it starts, it won't maintain idle and dies, unless I gas it a little and throw it in gear. Leave it in gear for a few seconds and put it back in park, and it idles fine. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks

well today i found another problem of my jeep. it started making a noise that i didnt like. so i hopped out and popped the hood. i noticed it was coming from my a/c compressor and was increasing with rpms. i think the bearing is going on my a/c pump. how hard is this to replace? could the a/c being low on freon cause this problem? it just happened today.

I think the top bolt on my NSS is broken. The bolt that goes into the side of the transmission where the wires attach to the switch itself. Does it actually come all the way out? The switch is loose, but i think thats what is holding it in place.
