low voltage
1996 cherokee country 4.0 stock
so the voltage in my xj has been running on the low side for a while and i figured the alternator was going but im no tech
. It runs at less than 14 and sometimes even as low as 9 or even less seeing as how the gauge goes only to 9. throttle doesn't skip, the lights will dim but they won't flicker. heat/radio/lights don't seem to worsen the problem at all so it leaves me wondering. i would however like to test my battery and alternator before just buying a new alternator. someone mentioned a voltage regulator as well. as i understand it i should get 12V at the battery terminals with the motor off to test the battery and 14ish volts with the motor running for the alternator. If perhaps there was a problem with the voltage regulator could it affect the battery/alternator tests?

I know how you feel, I replaced my belt yesterday. Same thing. After almost an hour of lots wd40, some hammering and jerking around I managed to get the bastard out. These seem to get stuck. After I loosened mine, It started coming off, with out loosening the belt at all. Some more hammer and it finally did. Then the belt going around the fan to run over the alternator dive was also a pain to do right.

I've been meaning to ask everyone, for all of you that have a working stereo an antenna, no offense intended trust me, so you run the stock antenna or have a different one for either your DD or trail rig. Reason I'm asking I'm gonna redo my stereo and Atm my signal sucks gonna redo my antenna wire well check it out and maybe get a new antenna while I'm at it

My guess is your battery terminals are corroded or no good anymore. Best to get some new ones to replace them, and clean up the battery posts really well before putting the new ones on.

Stop by your local auto parts chain (advanced auto, autozone, etc) and as them to test your charging system and load test your battery. They do it for free.
My guess is your battery terminals are corroded or no good anymore. Best to get some new ones to replace them, and clean up the battery posts really well before putting the new ones on.
