Default low voltage

1996 cherokee country 4.0 stock

so the voltage in my xj has been running on the low side for a while and i figured the alternator was going but im no tech . It runs at less than 14 and sometimes even as low as 9 or even less seeing as how the gauge goes only to 9. throttle doesn't skip, the lights will dim but they won't flicker. heat/radio/lights don't seem to worsen the problem at all so it leaves me wondering. i would however like to test my battery and alternator before just buying a new alternator. someone mentioned a voltage regulator as well. as i understand it i should get 12V at the battery terminals with the motor off to test the battery and 14ish volts with the motor running for the alternator. If perhaps there was a problem with the voltage regulator could it affect the battery/alternator tests?

thanks for any input

Good luck...
PB Blaster works much better than WD40 or liquid wrench do. Advance Auto, Lowes, and Home Depot all carry it.

Reception is based on the stereos FM Sensitivity Number. The lower the number, the better the reception. Installed a JVC Arsenal KD-AHD69 Stereo with a sensitivity of 8.3 dBf in my '01 XJ with stock antenna and wire. I pick up FM stations the factory radio never knew were there.

Stop by your local auto parts chain (advanced auto, autozone, etc) and as them to test your charging system and load test your battery. They do it for free.

My guess is your battery terminals are corroded or no good anymore. Best to get some new ones to replace them, and clean up the battery posts really well before putting the new ones on.

That's because WD40 is not really a good lubricant/penetrating oil. The "WD" stands for "water displacement", which is it's intended purpose.

Agreed PB Blaster is fantastic. Use the right tool for the job.
