Quick question on unibody repair, my friends 96' zj has a little bit of rot where the crossmember bolts to the unibody on the passenger side. It seems like there is a crack in the metal going between the 2 crossmember bolt holes. Is his best bet something like a TnT Frame Stiffener?
Hey.. I know a guy with a welder..

Do you? I told him not to go wheelin until the rot/crack is repaired. Need to grind it down, weld the crack, then weld on TnT stiffeners. If I can't get hold of a welder I'l have him contact you.

Thank you, after driving my jeep to work the check engine light went off and it seems to running great. I will see how it goes over the weekend. Good thing I opted for the full warranty.

OK! So I have 2 questions! I have a 97 Cherokee, 2 door, 4.0, auto trans. #1: To drive it I have to start in 1st-2nd instead of drive and shift my way up to drive. Starting in drive is like starting in 3rd gear. When in 1st-2nd it will eventually shift from 1st to 2nd, usually, then i put it in 3rd then drive. Once in drive it does shift to 4th gear. So, it shift up, mostly, but not down? What do i need to do to fix it? A sensor maybe?

#2: Recently its started being stubborn. Now after i start driving (shifting from 1st-2nd to drive) and i come to a stop (shifting back down from drive to 1st-2nd) and press the gas to go, its like starting in 2nd gear. however this is only until everything warms up pretty good (about 20 minutes) then every time it moves like its in 1st like normal. I did put some lucas stuff in my trans, didn't do a hole lot.

Maybe someone else will chime in with more knowledge of the aw4, my jeep has the ax15. My friends 98' xj with the aw4 has been doing all sorts of weird things. His wouldn't start unless it was in neutral most of the time, the other times he would have to cycle the shifter back and forth multiple times then start it. That is what happens when the NSS, neutral safety switch, starts to act up. Do a google search on jeep cherokee nss, you can rebuild them or replace it. Your shifting could be related to a bad tps, throttle position sensor, which I don't think is adjustable on your year however you can test it to identify if its working properly. If that is good there are several other things. Most people would start by checking the fluid level, then do a visual inspection of the fluid, lastly smell it (a burnt smell could indicate that its time for new fluid). If it is time to change the fluid, pick up a new filter and gasket as well. Your aw4 has shift solenoids that can act up too. Start by checking your fluid, if that is ok, hopefully someone else will chime in by then.

Did you drain the fluid or flush it? If flushed, was it mechanical or pressurized? What fluid did you put back into it, and how much?

i just drained it. maybe i should flush it. and i dont remember what fluid exactly. if i drain, flush and change the filter any suggestions on a recommended fluid?

plus i just read something on another forum, someone just took off there speed sensor pulled the cable and broke free a bunch of dirt in there, degreased it and it worked. but he wasnt too specific on his issue so idk if it would solve my problem.

1. Junkyard
2. Drain oil, remove oil pan bolts, clean the mating surface, install gasket, bolt pan back on, fill it back up with oil. First thing I would check is if the bolts near the leak are snug. If not, tighten them up.
