Could I just wrap the old fuel lines in duct tap to reinforce them? They aren't ripped but the wall of the vent tube is thin where the tube stretched.

Duct tape doesn't qualify as reinforcement, but if the only problem is that the hose is worn, I imagine a tight zip tie would prevent it from becoming a serious problem until you're able to replace the hose. That would NOT be a permanent fix, though.

No 3rd gear in my 88 XJ with the 904 automatic, started all at onced, reverse was slow to engage, (would have to let it warm up first), changed fluid/filter, adjusted reverse band, & this solved reverse problem, but still no 3rd. Pan sediments were normal. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Thin = damaged. Gasoline is a solvent and if a crack forms will just eat right through that when a crack forms. The line has fuel when it gets splashed up into it and when you fill it, it's part of the same space of the inside of the gas tank. Remember it's the cap installed in the quarter panel that seals the system.

In a C-clip axle I'm pretty sure the axles always either push against the center pin or yank on the side gears via the C-clips. If the outer bearings go bad I'd expect the axles to wallow around an cause some mayhem.
