Yup. Drain and fill a few times with the CORRECT fluid.

How many quarts should I buy? How many are required? Also when I replaced the speedometer gear, there was no fluid in the housing where the gear goes. Is that normal

3.75 quarts per drain and fill on an AW4. Double check as you do it according to the dipstick and it's instructions.

See previous answer. AW4 itself holds about half of the entire system capacity. Somewhere around here is a "self-flush" which uses the transmission's own fluid pump to exchange the fluid. This would be the fastest and cheapest way to change it all out at once.

And yeah that's normal, the oil doesn't even go up halfway in the case and the speedo gear sits on top of the output shaft. Unless you mean there were no signs of fluid in there whatsoever...

Why is ATF+4 so bad for the AW4, does it damage anything?
