Stroking the 4.0L increases compression and displacement. You get more power. Cheapest way to do this is crank and rods from a 4.2L.

Hang around some more and chill out with the attitude, you'll learn a lot. A lot of the members here are 17-25.

Update on my rear disc issue:
Drove yesterday and today down Rt. 17 and then I-66 briefly. Brakes feel much better and stop as they should. I suspect a tiny amount of air may remain in the system, but I have been considering having a flush done at a shop to more-so force fluid in and air out. Coasting is better, vibes are gone, and just feels more even.
Cruiser, I know what you mean now about the ZJ prop valve and also upon my own research. Heavy braking yields less in the rears than the front. I will def be swapping guts... just let me find a good priced used prop valve and let the 'cash/time spent' factor wear off from my wife (a nice dinner and shopping trip should cure that lol).

Anyone have experience swapping the NP231 to the NP242, how difficult is it? I've been wanting to change the transfer case so I can have 4wd full-time

Yeah, you younguns bear with us older guys and we'll get along just fine. Been alot of little buttheads with bad attitudes lately, and that has affected our attitudes a bit. Sorry if we are a little sensitive.

My old man always taught me not to mess with the older fellers. Even in my 20's I respect this lol. Besides... it's mostly all ya'll older guys who have the most Jeep experience and answers! Can't be biting the hand that feeds!

i have an 88 xj with a busted np242. 4.0 auto. what should the spine count be on the transfercase. i havnt pulled it out yet. i was trying to find a replacement before i take it out. did a search and getting some conflicting replys. this one is bone stock for now. lift and tires coming soon. 31's will be big enough for what i want to do but other mods will follow. tghanks

You should know I joke lol. Unfortunately I have noticed the attitudes too.. I think 'Fab' had a guy who busted the bad dude attitude at first on some thread about using carbon fiber to tie in his fender flares or something.
Also, wanted to ask... I saw something about a guy pulling the guts from his XJ prop valve and simply removing an o-ring to allow 50/50 split pressue... at first glance I am hesitant and will likely still hold out for a ZJ prop valve, but does this other mod hold value?

I'd look for '97 or newer since that will maintain the same tail cone setup. If you're doing an SYE it doesn't matter. Even the old NP242s didn't have the stupid vacuum CAD thingy.
