Found an old rag tag volt meter which led to me swapping a light socket out with one of the parts jeep. And I have lights. Thanks guys. The socket was grounding back thru the running light hot wire instead of the ground

Do the connector refreshing anyway. It needs it. Along with post #1 and post #2. Are you done yet?

OK, I'm a noob with a question.
I recently picked up a 93 XJ 4.0 Litre. I went to do my first oil change (on the jeep that is, I done many an oil change) had everything set, new oil and a Mobil 1 filter. I dumped the oil and then went to remove the filter and noticed that there was no way the new filter would fit as it was too large a diameter. So... The oil change literally became that, just fresh oil with the old filter left on.
I assumed I just the the filter chart wrong so I went back to get the right filter when I realized every filter they were trying to sell me from fram to purolator, Mobil 1 to k&n were all the large diameter filter that's not going to fit my oil filter adapter.
Any ideas? Was there another style that went on some 4 liters? If it helps it was a march 93 production date. I'm really looking to avoid having to pull the filter, get a ride to the parts store with a dirty filter and just size it out that way. Also, the current filter is rather generic and has no part number visible for a cross reference.

Waaait a second, are you just saying that the total width of the filter is more than the mounting surface of the adapter on the engine? The gasket is the same on all of them.

Which filter did you pick up? M1-204 and WIX 51085 are ~3.7" wide, and I know that WIX develops very tightly to OEM specs. How is the filter mounted?

But, I think we're getting somewhere. Do the filters typically screw directly to the engine (filter sticks off perpendicularly)? My engine has an adapter so the filter is actually parallel to the engine with the seal facing to the back of the Jeep. I thought this was normal but maybe it's not. If I were to use the M1 filter or any of those that are supposed to fit, the seal would be on the outside of the adapter and I'd be squirting oil on the road like James Bond.
And thanks to everyone who threw the noob a speedy reply.

I should mention that when this jeep lived in Colorado, it was owned by a mechanic so it's quite possible that what I'm looking at (on a vehicle that's nearly 21 years old) isn't quite stick oem anymore.
