Cruiser said it took about 4 quarts just by pulling the plug... when I pulled the plug, I only got about 2 quarts (half gallon) out... so, not wanting to over-fill, I put in 3 quarts, then checked the dip-stick right after... and it's way over the full line. That was with the engine off though. So how should I check it to make sure I put enough/not too much in?

So I just got home and checked the fluid... I figured out two things... there's nothing showing on the dipstick, and is the dipstick end supposed to be metal? I don't have a plastic handle, but a metal ring on the end...
And I also found this mess:
No idea what it is... or where it was coming from. Right under a hose labeled "heater" which I'm assuming refers to the heater core?

Looks like mud splashed in your engine bay.
How did you manage to let your trans get so low on fluid? Have you never checked it?
Drain what fluid might be left in the trans out. Buy 4 quarts of Dex/Merc fluid. Put 3 quarts into the dipstick tube. Follow the instructions on the dipstick and fill it til full.

wont hurt it to warm it up. the fluid needs to be cycling through tranny to check level. If you drained pan. 3-3.5 should bring back to full.

And I don't think it was mud... it has sort of a green-ish tint. But I suppose it could be mud.

I'm considering just doing a slight lift to my already 3in RC lift that i have. I was thinking of doing the rusty. 75in shackle and .75in spacer.... only reason is I want to put 32s on and would like the added clearance...
im curious if the front spacer will actually gain the .75 in? as well as the rear?

My jeep sounds like a damn jet fighter when accelerating. Is this just the mechanical fan or maybe the fan clutch is bad?

I put the full 4 quart bottle in and it filled me right up to the line. I guess it WAS showing on the dipstick and I just couldn't see it. The fluid was really nasty. It shifts much better now... still jerks shifting between drive/reverse/park, but I wasn't expecting fluid to change that. As for the "slipping" or whatever was happening before, I have no idea as of yet... didn't happen on my test drive. I'll probably get another TPS just because they're so cheap and throw it on. And yeah, I hadn't checked it before. I'm still learning the whole routine of caring for a car... my parents haven't been much help.

Always check your fluid levels when you acquire a new vehicle. Check not only the level, but the condition.

Haven't really done much of anything. I was gonna change my DS u-joints because I thought that was what was causing the rough shifts, but the "slack" that is causing the jerking when shifting between P/R/D seems to be inside of the transmission itself.

Grease everything first. Check the fluid condition in a week. If it's funky, do another drain and fill.
