Quick question about regearing...

Currently my stock D30 front axle has 3.07 gears... since I want to regear to 4.11 that's going to require a new carrier, correct?

I know I need one for my rear axle due to the previous owner welding the rear end up... but I'm unsure if I need one for the front.

Yes it will. Carrier break for the XJ d30 is 3.55/3.73.

Hello,
I am replacing a cracked head this week. 2 questions:
1) My oil pressure at operating temp was 13 psi at idle and 37 psi at 2000 RPM. Is this normal or does it indicate bearing wear?
2) If the oil pressure is too low, would high mileage oil be a solution?

So I had my right rear axle replaced on my 99 wj. So they r pressed on the axle with the wheel bearing. My mechanic said he replaced bearing n seal on right axle n said he replaced the seal on the left as well without replacing the bearing cuz he had the special tools to replace the seal without removing the wheel bearing. Us that possible when they r pressed on???

1) It is a bit low. However i wouldn't trust the dashboard gauge to give an accurate reading, always double check with a mechanical gauge. This could be a byproduct of the cracked head however. How long have you been driving it with the cracked head? I would replace the head and change the oil first and see if the pressure comes back. Should be at around 25psi idle 60psi cruising.

2) No, there is no difference in high mileage vs standard oils other than the detergent level. Also, thicker oil is NOT a solution to low oil pressure, and can do more harm than good.

yes. the WJ rear (assuming it's a d35) has the bearings pressed onto the axle shaft itself. The seals are at the end of the axle tube though. The bearing does not need to be removed to replace the seal.

So when u pull out the axle is the seal on the axle itself or does it remain in the wheel housing?

Thanks for the quick reply, Dukie. I drove roughly 3,000 miles before I figured out what was going on with the cracked head. 2000 miles of that was the end of the last oil change (from which I took a sample to have it tested for coolant) and 1000 miles was on new oil.

The Jeep's in the shop now for a head replacement (waiting for the new head to ship). Are cam bearings something the shop could check while the engine is disassembled, or do we have to wait for everything to be put back together again to get a good read on it? It seems a shame to put it all back together just to take it apart again if the bearings need replacing.

in your case the bearing is on the axle shaft itself, and the seal remains in the axle housing when you pull the axles
