XJ Ask the Question Thread
I have a 1998 Xj sport 4.0 aw4 and when I drive though slush it loses power and starts popping from under the hood. If I stomp on it, it stops until I let off, if I let it do it, it slows down to about 10mph and pops bad. Obviously staying on the gas isn't an option in the slush because ill end up in the ditch. What do you guys think my problem is? It does something similar while warming up but goes away as soon as It gets to operating temps
Random Stalling Of My 91 Cherokee Sport. Why?
Up until yesterday, My 1991 Cherokee Sport 2WD 4.0 automatic has ran flawless. No mods, box stock. Plenty of fuel in the tank, and it was as if I reached down and just turned off the engine. Was doing about 25 mph, and was about 5 miles into my drive. Pulled to the side, fired right back up and proceeded to park. A 2 mile journey after that rendered no stalls. Little time had past, and I took another 5 mile or so trek only to have this happen again. This time it took a little loner to get it started. Drove it home without incident (2 miles) and parked it. There's no forewarning of these stalls such as sluggish acceleration, hesitation, etc, which seems to rule out fuel starvation. Just cuts out! Coil wires appear to be in good shape although while I had the hood up and engine idling, I heard what sounded like an arcing sound twice within about 10 minutes of idling. Engine ran smooth the entire time. Some say mass air sensor, while others say crank positioning sensor, and to also check the plug in to the computer module for corrosion. Trial, and error equals $$$$$ which I'm short of due to the 15 mpg this puppy gets. I love my Jeep. Can any of you veterans give my some good advice? Yes, I'm new here, and have faith in these forums. Thank you in advance. JT

The big nut that the line threads in to is the pressure valve. 9 times out of 10 when you try to break the line loose from the pressure valve it breaks loose in the pump first so you have to pull the pulley to get a wrench on it.
If you try to wedge a wrench down in there you're going to bend the pulley and have to replace it anyway. Don't ask me how I know...

Cleaning up all of the wires and connectors for corrosion and shorts is an excellent starting point. You can solve and prevent a LOT of issues this way. This thread has a few sections on doing just that, and while it's written for XJs 87-90 a lot of the same applies to later models: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f51/cr...x-tips-153657/
If, after doing all that work and testing, you rule out problems with those, don't bother trying to get a Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP or CPS) from cheap parts stores. A proper Mopar one from the dealership is really the only reliable option. Many people have had like 4 DOAs in a row from Autozone.
You're wanting to remove the pressure valve or the line?

When unscrewing the pressure line from the bottom I saw one person use a "crows foot" style wrench to get it loose. My normal open end wrenchs didnt have much effect on the bottom one

I really need an advice about my exhaust system. When I bought my Jeep and looked under it, it was normal. A cat(which I thought it was a cat) and a muffler. Then I installed Flowmaster delta flow 40 series muffler. And yesterday I realised that the thing that I thought cat was another muffler. I didn't have any knowledge about mufflers and cats until I bought my flowmaster one month ago, but when I learned about them a little, I noticed this weirdness. I think the former owner had his own reasons to do that.
So my question is, should I remove this muffler? I will change it with a high-flow cat as soon as possible, but until then I really wouldn't say no to a louder exhaust, since delta flows are very quiet .
