I've been having a problem where sometimes when I first start it the rpms go high then slowly come back down to normal. I cleaned the IAC to try to fix the problem. Now it won't start or idle unless I have the throttle partially open until it warms up. Did I do something wrong or is the problem somewhere else?

Take a gander on here for a writeup on testing the TPS. The PCM uses the TPS to set IAC position.

I wouldn't be surprised that if, after 22 years of service, your IAC is junk.

Buy thermostats from the dealer.

I still have my misfire. Haven't had the time to deal with it yet but here is my question. My xj runs "smooth" with the misfire until it hits over drive then starts really misfiring and shaking. Why does it do that? If I drive in the "3" position on the gear select it almost acts like there isn't any misfire.

So confuzzled!!!!!

Heavy secondary ignition load in higher gears. Plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. How old?

Interesting. So, tentatively, the Motorad high flow stat is the same?

I'm thinkin'. I'll try to go by O'Reilly's today and verify.

Looks like good old Stant has gone the way of Fram. Drop the quality via out-sourcing, mass merchandise, and live off your old reputation and hokie advertising.

Plugs are less than a year old. Just changed the number three plug due to it being the misfire code and I have a coil rail sadly

Don't see your year in your post. Something like this is probably better posted in OEM tech.

Sorry it's a 2000 xj straight six. Cylinder head was replaced earlier this year and this last weekend I started getting a misfire on cylinder 3. Wrapped the injecter and fuel rail thinkin I had heat soak and still have it. Also as I stated I replaced the plug on cylinder 3 and it made no difference. Just the way it is acting while driving that I stated earlier had me a little confused

Could be a dirty injector.

Find a shop or store that carries BG 44K. Add a can to a full fuel tank. Run it down to 1/2 tank. Add gas back to Full. Run to 1/4 tank.
