does anyone know how to tell the difference betwine metric and standard piston rings? i havnt pulled the pistons out yet, are they marked or do i have to measure them?

For the last week, it was very cold (14-15 F or -10 C), and of course it took its toll on my jeep. It always starts with a healthy crank, but when cold starting it stalls and sometimes dies if gas pedal is not pressed. I press the pedal just for 5 secs or less, so stalling does not long that last. No problem when the engine is warm. I have cleaned the TB and IAC just 3 months ago, so I don't think that's the problem. Is it something to be worried about, or should I live with it for the winter, and see if it is any better in spring or summer?

Chances are the cold is draining the battery. Get it load tested to start and also do a refreshing of the grounds and clean the clamps, terminals etc and apply Di electric grease to it. What year did you say it was again

When the battery is very low the drag on the alternator is increased. Running the engine at a higher speed increases the rate of charge and eventually the alternator won't be struggling so much anymore.

(BTW his profile and sig say 1991, I guess you're using the app)

It's a 91!

Battery is brand new, but clamps are a little bit corroded. I will clean them and see if it's getting any better, thanks .

A new battery means nothing if wires and clamps have corrosion on them. Also check the copper under the clamps.

I think 2000 were metric anyway but not 100% sure. What catalog are you looking at?

Overheating, 1988 remix 4.0 a few weeks ago it was fine but I saw a post that I should change to the Volvo cap on the expansion tank so since swapping to that I have problems. I understand people say that I don't have to bleed the system but you can hear it gurgling in the hoses and no matter what I do it gets hot. I have not let it get to the red zone but it has got close more then a few times now.

Any quick tips to remedy this, it's my DD so I need her in tip top shap for this next week.

You do have to bleed the Renix system. It's very important, in fact.

Never done it in my life, nor did our techs from 1987 to 1992 at the dealership.


Check this out from the FSM

This system does not have a radiator pressure cap. Instead the pressure cap is mounted on the coolant pressure bottle. System coolant flows directly through a fully pressurized Hot-Type expansion bottle. Coolant flows through the pressure bottle at all times during engine operation whether the engine is cold or at normal operating temperatures.

Larger coolant volume caused by thermal expansion during engine operation is absorbed by the expansion chamber in the bottle. Air trapped in the system is purged through the pressure cap vent valve during maximum coolant expansion..

Well I guess yours worked. I had to overhaul my entire system, and I chose to convert it since I was going through the trouble.

You MUST give them a good push down onto the bottle and make sure you get it good and tight.
