I am assuming that it would be, but we all know what happens when we assume. From what I have read the 96 xj 2wd has a dyna 35 and the 4x4's have a chrysler 8.25. Being it is coming from a 4wd I assume that the chrysler axle is a limited slip differential. Would that be correct or not? Also I am getting the axle for free and that is the reason I am not purchasing a locker for the current axle. I also read that the pinion housing is longer on the chrysler, so would that mean I need to use the driveshaft from the 4wd? Thanks for the help guys..

As I wrote earlier, 2WD and 4WD XJs use the same rear axles. Literally the same. Chrysler 8.25, Dana 35, and Dana 44 ('80s) could be in any XJ. Dana 35 was the only axle available with ABS. D35 has a shorter pinion than the other XJ rear axles and therefore a different drive shaft. Drive shafts are sized to the axle and the transmission, 2WD and 4WD drive shafts are nowhere near compatible. Track-Lock limited slip differential was available on customer request or a part of the UpCountry option group. It was not standard on anything.
It sounds like you just want a locker for your current axle. You have some research to do.

Dummy gauges IIRC. When jeep is "warm" feel the radiator hoses or check if temp gun. Possible thermostat is stuck open. I know some older xjs will Chime in

Likely heater core is clogged up, XJs will last a long time without regular maintenance, and as a result people tend to NOT perform regular maintenance on these things. Start with a complete flush of the entire cooling system.

And eliminate the heater control valve and plug it's vacuum source while you're at it.
