My best guess is that when you put the intake in you did not get the dowel pins properly in the holes of the intake. Causing the intake to not be lined up correctly and allowing lots of air in.
I did this the first time I installed the new APN exhaust manifold. I ended up breaking off one of the intake tabs that was supposed to line up on the pin.
A little JB Weld and a bit more care and double checking I was able to get it all lined up and things ran as expected.
Not being able to get one of the bolts in is a huge hint that something is not lined up correctly. once all is in the right place all of the bolts will go in.

Sometimes a little filing on the intake manifold is needed with the replacement header/exhaust manifolds. See attached pic.

I had to file my intake on my 97 on the runner itself, I also made one of the mounting holes on the exhaust manifold a bit bigger. This for an apn header.

Is this a good kit to replace the head gasket on my 01 xj?
It even includes head bolts, and from what I know, someone already replaced the head gasket 50 k miles ago, so I wouldn't want to re use it again.
Or should I go with a mopar gasket kit?

I'm going to be putting on a new header in the next couple weeks. Should I get new bolts for the intake and header or will it be ok using the old ones ?

Anybody with a 95+ XJ with airbags... What do you do about them while off-road? I know 95s and 96s have self contained mechanical units and quite frankly they scare the **** out of me... I've even considered swapping out the wheel for an older style or aftermarket one since I'm the only driver of the vehicle ever.

Dealers and shops may not remove airbags except in special circumstances. There is no federal law that says you cannot remove your own. Some states have laws that do prohibit airbag removal, so do your research or ask an inspection shop (if applicable in your state).
I'm not a fan of airbags, personally. I don't trust the Gen I airbags in the old vehicles I drive, and I don't want to worry about it in my offroad rig.

We don't have inspections here in GA. I wish I had the newer style bags, where I believe you can just pull a fuse to disable them... I'll check out the GA laws though just in case... The only situation where anybody would even know is if I got into an accident and got hurt... But what would they do, in all honesty? Press charges on me for removing my own air bags and harming myself? Actually.. I could see it.

Even if I only have liability and the accident isn't my fault?
I figure if I get in an accident it'll be my health insurance paying my medical bills not my car insurance...
Forgive my ignorance, never dealt w/ insurance before.

So I googled it... I dont have PIP or anything like that... Just liability... So if I was at fault there should be no issue. My liability would cover the other person's stuff and my medical would help me if I was injured. But if it wasn't my fault, could the other person's insurance decline to pay me because I removed my air bags? A bit unclear. I know this isn't the insurance policy thread but maybe one of you knows. Clown?
