XJ Ask the Question Thread
Wiring issues/Dash lights out
Hello everyone,
I am trying to get the dashboard/instrument panel lights to work on an 89 jeep cherokee and am having some trouble. There is a loose female plug that is dangling under my steering wheel and I cannot figure out where it goes. It is coming off the main harness and the wires are red w/ white stripe, black, and gray.
The car is not in the states, so getting parts is difficult. Is there anyway to fix the headlight dimmer switch if finding the connection for this other cable does not work?
Thanks for all the help,
Islandcherokee

When I did my sye I put new plastic pads on one of the forks (originals were in pieces). Could that make my tcase hard to shift? I'm pretty sure the linkage needs adjusted but even by hand I need a small crowbar (or some kind of leverage) to make it move. Is that normal? If not what would make it do that? Any help appreciated.

Yea I tried that at first and got some grinding which is odd to me because that hasn't happened to me before. Stopped put trans in neutral and got it into 4lo like normal (a little resistance but nothing extreme). I left it in 4lo while wheeling, then when going to leave is when I started having issues, stopped trans neutral, went to 4hi on case, it made a bit of grinding noise doing that. Tried to drive off and shift to 2hi and it wouldn't budge. Then it popped itself (case) into neural and wouldn't stay in 4hi after that. I had to hold the handle while I drove home (its not even a mile away). I could feel it jerking like it wanted to go in neutral.
I honestly don't remember if I bought it from Rough Country or the Rugged Ridge one on amazon. I think it was RC when I ordered a bunch of stuff.
When I installed it I measured the shaft, and I didn't need to trim it. Its been a while now but I'm pretty sure that was the case. If it wasn't trimmed and needed it would I even be able to shift it at all? Because I can (or could I should say) get it to move by hand before I took it out for a ride.
Lol.
Yea I did a full sye, a different cross member, swapped from a 242 to 231 (yes the shift gate was swapped), and used boostwerks linkage. I don't know exactly where my problem is.
I'm going to try and mess with the linkage tonight see if that helps or changes anything. I just don't know why it would be hard to move by hand or if it should/shouldn't be like that.

I see. Transmission & engine mounts & linkage would be my concern. Especially with that tcase drop, which I assume you changed crossmembers for... (with an SYE? Really?)
