Yes. Around 1993-1994 Jeep changed from using a bellhousing with internal slave cylinder to a bellhousing with external slave cylinder. Transmission itself is the same. There aren't any differences in strength between the two anyway, it's really about serviceability.

Default Height difference?

I was just told that when going from the D30 to the HP30 that the coil seats and/or shock mounts are different heights. Is this true and if so could you tell me the differences? Oh the D30 is in my 98 and the HP is in a 99.

Couple things...

1. The only difference between an LP and HP D30 is the pinion housing and gears.

2. 1998 and 1999 both use HP D30s.

OK my 98 XJ 4.0 stutters and runs rough. I give it gas and it stutters and sounds like a motorcycle. But the weird thing is after driving it for about 30 seconds it clears up and idles fine. It smells like fuel when it stutters too. Last tune up under 10k miles

No CEL?

Have it scanned for codes?

No codes? No check engine light, nothing. I'm stuck on this one. Some are saying O2 sensors, map sensor, bad injectors, big vacuum leak.

Mine does the exact same thing. I have been trying for almost 2 yrs to track down what is causing it and no luck. None of the guys that I have talked to from the local Jeep club have ever ran into it themselves and I can't afford to "take it in".

Hey guys, define "tune up". What parts were replaced and which brands?

When I say Codes, I mean did you have it scanned for codes rather than relying on a CEL to alert you.

Yes. I've got a scan tool.

For me tune up was Champion plugs Bosch wires the autozone common shelf brand cap and rotor. Don't remember all the codes that keep popping up but sometimes it will go for days with no codes showing then bank1 position1 O2 sensor will show, or the code for the PRNDL (currently on my 3rd), and sometimes cylinder 3 misfire. Then I will start the jeep again a few times later and pop no codes showing for a while but it still runs the same.
It's proving to just be an annoyance that I have gotten used to, but heck I don't now about him but I am pulling about 21.5 mpg out of the 4.0 running 3.55s and 30"s and I do a lot of city driving.

Sounds like you've got wiring and/or ground problems with that list of troubles.
