What's been happening to the transfer cases? Many reach to 300k, going through two is highly unusual unless you break them open on rocks. Were they not filled with lubricant?
Something's fishy. They're great transfer cases.

I Don't know what happened to the first one but the current one sounds like a bearing going out when in any 4wd position and then takes MILES to to go back into 2wd position, Fluid is clean and full

I would like to replace it with a 231 but was wondering if this is a direct swap or if I would need to change driveshafts?
What about it "went out?" As long has its got the right fluid in it and you're using it properly it should last as long as the rest of the drivetrain.

The "went out" is it dosent work right anymore, very loud bearing sounding noise when in 4wd quiet in 2wd, takes forever to go back into 2wheel after being in 4wheel

Shifting it like this? Transfer case linkage adjusted properly after verifying condition of engine and trans mounts?

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual. The suggestions in ITALICS are mine.

"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off.

4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

To shift out of 4L, shift the transmission into neutral with the vehicle stopped, shift the transfer case lever to 2H, then to D if you have an automatic, or into first gear with a manual, and continue on.

Yes I know how to properly put it in and out of 4wd, I have owned it for 7 yrs in pa winters, it has been used, but never off road this is a stock not abused daily driver. This problem happened all of a sudden last winter and I need to get it replaced real soon hence asking about the conversion to a 231 or I will replace it with another 242.

What about the mounts? If they're bad, the linkage doesn't do what it's supposed to............

All the mounts are good, engine and trans, I had checked the linkage adjustment also. Not sure what is causing the issue, maybe it's just my bad luck LOL But the current problem is for sure internal. I wish I knew why the original was replaced before I got the jeep. This thing is a headache. 3 rads, 2 water pumps, AC compressor, Evap core, heater core, rear leaf springs, crank sensor"which I know is common", coil, exhaust manifold, fuel gauge quit working but you'd never guess by looking at the jeep clean, no rust. Just my luck LOL

Default Low Range 4x4

Hi all, I tried putting my 1995 Cherokee Sport into the low range 4x4 mode today. I was stationary, put 4x4 high range in gear and it drove fine. Then I stopped and put it in neutral, paused, then down to 4x4 low range. My first question is why the steering is limited (turned sharp and steering wheel kicked back at me and vibrated)? Secondly, I was going about 15 mph in (my guess was that it was in 3rd) gear low range and I heard a loud, constant cranking, as if the gears started grinding. I stopped, put it in park and turned off the engine to stop the gear grinding. I eventually struck it back in high range 4x4 and then to regular 2 wheel drive. What is the correct procedure for going 2 wheel to 4 wheel drive high and then to low range? Going back up from low range to regular 2 wheel drive? What drive gear should I be in (neutral)? Are there any limitations on the 4x4 high and low ranges like steering or speed?

Thank you for your answers!

I just saw the post above about this haha, just wondering if anyone has insider tips on doing the shifts. Like if it's anything different from what the owner's manual would say. It just grinds in and out of the low range every time I have tried it.

JeepvsLandrover you were driving on pavement weren't you? That's completely normal for that. (which you shouldn't do)

Thinking about installing a Transmission cooler instead of the in-radiator cooler for my AW4 Transmission.

Does anyone have experience with these.

Where did you mount your cooler and pictures would be great.

Thanks,

RSWiser

Run it inline with the radiator cooler. Trans to radiator to aux cooler to trans. Mount it in front of the radiator
