Had the brakes go out on my XJ. It was by the grace of God I was not driving in rush hour DC area traffic or going 60 down route 17... which is where I was headed to test the new belt for noise/snap. On a whim, I checked the mail first, and that is where it happened on a small country road 100 yards from my house.
Confirmed it to be the passenger side rear wheel area. Havent had a chance to pull the wheel. Did a disc brake conversion. I suspect from the distinct balloon pop noise that the rubber hose from the donor ZJ gave way. What do yall think?
Also, it did when I pushed the brake pedal to the floor. I have not swapped the proportioning valve yet. Could that have a hand in this?
Thanks yall.

Looks like the v6 that a few unlucky xj's were burdened with. But it's hard to say, it looks like there's a bunch of other crap thrown on it and I'm on my phone
Edit: im gonna guess 4 banger, final answer

Ok new here! I have spent the past several DAYS attempting to find my gremlin. Here we go, Jeep starts decent. Then the whistle starts, ear brake pedal. There seems to be a rubber gasket that has something under it that is moveable. So we start driving, temp doesn't matter. the hissing continues until we hit the brake. one of 2 things occur. first the idle drops drastically or we just stall out. Nothing like highway speeds to a stalled vehicle. headed down now to get a power brake booster check valve and new upper rad. hose. before I go, please say this is something that sounds like it may help.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.
XJ/ZJ blocks and 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1991 to 1995 YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).
TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.
