Fresh blood! I mean, uh, welcome
99 Sport 4.0L 4-door 5-speed high five! lol I love mine. No, reverse isn't synchonized.
All of 'em really. Engine blocks and heads from 1987-1999 XJ Cherokees, 1992-1995 (last run of '95s was made in '96) YJ Wranglers, or even a 1993-1998 ZJ Grand Cherokee. However staying about 1997+ will be easiest as the later models have the best flowing heads and all the improvements over the years. While a 2000 or 2001 4.0L will install fine, if you find it in a junkyard Cherokee it's there for a reason, also the exhaust ports are different in the head. WJ Grand Cherokee and TJ Wrangler 4.0Ls don't work, block mounts are different.
Whatever you end up with, just make it a long-block swap. Unless you stay 1997-1999 a lot of sensors, accessories, etc are different. If you wind up with an engine from 1996 model year or prior you'll need to plug a hole at the rear of the head that was previously used for the temp gauge.
just needs a motor they blew head gasket and drove for a while it will start but needs a new motor rod knock its high mileage too. It was built 4/99 still has distributor. I know this has probably been asked a lot but I was wondering what year motors will interchange if I pull my fuel rail manifold etc and swap to new motor. I know I can get a low mileage 96-98 motors at junkyard around home for $ 350. I've swapped motors in other vehicles what is the usual swap time? thanks for your time!

Thanks salad that's good info for me I'm kinda lost on the jeep thing I was wanting to stay away from the 2000 2001 because of the head crack issues. but a guy I know his son rolled a 2001 it has 100,000 just hit for 500 bucks. I'm just wondering what to do I want to build it right and do some mods to it but its going to be a work in progress for a while I will do build pics when I get to start I just had a baby 5 days ago so its going to be interesting!

Just a quick question:
I've not been able to replace the chassis front-to-rear brake line on my XJ for nearly 3 weeks now. Simply put, work, finals, and other surprises have kept me insanely busy and that doesn't even account for the bad weather (which is when I need the damn thing). I've not even had time to go out and start it, make sure it's alright. The battery, an old Valuecraft that was on its last legs to begin with, is probably shot and will be replaced with a better unit. I have synthetic-blend oil and a quality filter in the rig.
My question is will sitting another week be a total FUBAR for my Jeep? These God damned finals are done this week and I'll have all weekend (considering it isn't snowing/raining/hellfire outside). I hate seeing it sit and it needs an inspection. I truly... TRULY despise college. Working 40 near DC and then putting up with crap just leaves no time for anything, and the workforce nowadays in the engineering field just NEEEEEEEEEEEEEDS that piece of paper!

Only thing that sitting may do is run the battery down gradually, with the memory in the radio drawing a very low amperage. Otherwise it will be fine after you get the new brake line in, bleed the rear brakes etc, and do what you have to about the the old battery.

SYE and cheapest driveshaft
I recently bit the bullet and ordered a SYE. However money has gone tight again and I can't exactly afford a tom woods driveshaft or anything like that. My XJ is a manual and it looks like I can't use a front shaft because of that. What would be the cheapest option for me driveshaft wise? Also how long would it take to install the SYE in the driveway? Can anyone recommend a good cheap set of snap ring pliers that won't break immediately?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Neither the A/C or defrost is on. I borrowed an IR gun about a week ago to check my gauge and it was accurate. I haven't had a chance to borrow it again after this started, and I have my own on order. The temp was checked at the head from 10 inches away. Could a bad relay cause it to turn on early?
