I have 2001 XJ, 4.5 lift and 16" rubicon wheels w/265/70-16. I want to get it to AZ from Maryland. U-Haul wants $900 for car trailer and $470 for dolly one way. Any advice on towing with dolly or options would be appreciated.

I've towed with a dolly. Worked great, but they were stock jeeps. You may want to use a full trailer for stability reasons.

Did you put the transfer case in neutral?

When I towed mine, I put transmission and TC in neutral to be safe. The dolly I rented from Uhaul had straps that wouldn't fit around my 33s, so I ran my own ratchet straps around the front tires.

I always hate this topic lol. I thought the tranny should be in park or gear cause in neutral the gears won't turn the fluid and I can heat up. There's always different things said

That's very strange. Uhaul only charged me ~$480, taxes in, to go from MI to CA. Their justification was that it was the weekly rate. Are they charging you two weeks or something?

Anyway depends what you're towing with. If you're using a full-sized pickup 1/2 ton or larger a dolly will work fine, provided the transfer case is in neutral and transmission is in park for a slushbox or in gear for a stick. For that distance though removing the rear DS would be worth it.

Really though that distance you want a full trailer for. That's a lot of unnecessary wear, and your tow vehicle won't have any brakes. XJ + dolly is about 3500lbs on the conservative side of mass you won't have additional ability to stop. UHaul's surge brakes kinda suck but they're a lot better than nothing.

(some states you pass through have arcane towing laws too about minimum brake requirements based on weight)

Yes that's why. Hydraulic action in the transfer case can still turn the transmission, equating to unnecessary wear. In both auto and manual oil is circulated by the input section - when the front half is stopped and the rear is spinning madly there's no lubrication to anything. No bueno.

Transfer case oil pump is on the main shaft so this isn't a problem.

Question, my 95 xj literally got sluggish today. Nothing happened, havent even wheeled it at all recently. I know they are not fast to begin with, but the throttle response is just weakened now. It still gets up to the same speeds fine, just seems to take longer and more pressure on the skinny pedal. Am I right to assume this problem could be fuel injectors? I am going to replace them, but before I do is there anything else that can be done. Im going to clean the throttle body and air intake as well when I do this.

Where you driving any car that was made in this decade before driving the xj? If so, this may be your answer.
