I'm currently getting round 10 mpg on my stock 98 xj. How do I improve it? I guess I could change out filters and do a basic tune up. But is something wrong?

Ok on a stock rig that is bad. Not to be rude. Def do a time up kit and change your o2 sensors too. Spark plugs distributor air filter etc. And a good oil change too. You'll notice a huge difference in your rig

Default New head unit and now no head lights

I have read that other people have had a similar problem. I think that I have a bad ground most likely judging from what other people have said.

For those of you who have installed a new head unit what did you ground it to? I grounded it to the old ground wire. Good idea?

I have a 96 xj and I have no dash lights, no dome lights, and the headlights work but they turn the radio off.

What? That's definitely bad. I get about 17.5mpg with no lift, mud tires, and a chopped facia/bumper.

My first stop would be a new upstream (right before the cat) o2 sensor, followed closely by an oil change and air filter change. If the mileage is still bad, swap the plugs for new ones (Champion Copper) and clean up the throttle body. I also suggest a liberal seafoam application

Which of these would you guys get? The quick pin ones are bigger and easier but more expensive. Also the quick pin ones i dont think i have seen anyone use here. Or just go with the cheaper screw pin 3/4" one. They will both fit in the D ring tabs on my bumper. Thx for the input. Btw- these are from tsc.

Mind you that I dont know if i truly have the AX-15 in my 1992 XJ.

I have the 4L I6 MPI with a 5 speed transmission. I am kinda new at mechanical work and I am a poor college kid trying to have some fun. If someone can help me out in figuring out if I truly have the AX-15 or the NV3550. Currently looking for a donor jeep!
You have an AX-15 if you have a 5-speed in the 1992. However converting from 4x2 to 4x4 is a huge undertaking. The list of things to be swapped includes:
transmission (needs to have correct output - needs to have np242 output)
transfer case
front and rear driveshafts
front axle
rear axle (if existing rear axle gear ratio does not match the donor front axle)

basically you would need to find a 4x4 donor, and swap damn near everything over

depends how you will be using it. If it's just for show or to attach hooks to, get the screw ones (helps prevent theft). If you plan on taking it off regularly to attach straps to, get the quick release.

and to add to dukie if you wanna do the basics before a swap also make sure you have right tire pressure too. I run at 33psi in my 235/70/16. I could prob go a lil more but i like the bouncy feel to them so dep on your tire size see what you have. Ion the door frame itll tell you what you should run at

nope, at least not for a cherokee.

If you're trying to bypass the a/c compressor you're SOL. You need to get a bypass pulley to put in it's place - it's the only way to get everything to spin the correct way.

Default No By-passing

No, not bypassing anything, running belt as illustrated in chilton's. Does your water pump rotate to the left or right? Mine rotates left, wrong way for me.

I have been wanting to buy a motorcycle, and my jeep has been gifted to me (so now i have something else to spend money on and keep me busy). I believe the shocks are blown but im not picking it up untill tomorrow (thursday) evening. I know the driver back end has a dent in it and the wheel was dented due to the impact (lost control in snow and the back end swung into a tree.) I plan on getting the jeeps shocks checked, but my father tells me old fords had some kind of shocks or something or other that when they went bad the fords would shake and almost make you lose some control....do the XJ's have this? do you even know what it is? (the problem has been explained by when going over a bump at about 55mph it rocks back and forth for a few seconds.) i don't believe the tree to the rear driverside tire and the shaking is related....the previous owner had it fixed and a new tire put on the spare tires wheel....(anyone got a spare tire to sell for the 89 XJ?) sorry for the longevity of the message.....il know mroe after i pick it up.
