"Had it rebuilt"? Sounds like your rebuilder failed. When they start leaking again that means the bearings are shot. What kind of bearings die in one year? Either he used a Dollar Tree bearing kit or they were never changed in the first place...

I do hear you on the ugprades though. But where'd you get this 1" clearance business from?

Yeah well that's why I will be doing this one myself.
231 cases don't hang as low as 242s.
At least it doesn't appear to me like they do...
The thing is I don't think replacing bearings and seals will fix my case. I mean, as soon as a load is on it the thing let's out a bang like a 12 gauge with magnum loads and then I loose front wheel drive.
Not to mention the sounds I hear when the front drive shaft is off and I spin the front yoke

Yeah they do... they're almost the same size dude lol. About 1/2" overall larger if I remember right. Are you thinking perhaps of the difference between AW4 and AX-15 crossmembers? Some guys use an AX-15 crossmember under their AW4s to give a 1" drop to the slip yoke. Or clocking between XJs and TJs?



idk it might be me but they've always looked the same in person. Parts books specify the same drive shaft and skid plate.

Oh yeah. Sounds like it's done. Maybe bent or chipped parts internally. New unit would be a good idea!

Gut tells me you won't get as much value for the XJ as you want so your math might be pretty off. Go check out the Craigslist thread lol.

What year JK are you considering? Personally the XJ (possibly a TJ) is the newest Chrysler product I could ever be convinced to buy.

There's a thought ^^ Then you can fix one or the other yourself and not have to take a cab to the parts store

Maybe your right, salad. For some reason I thought the 231 wasn't as long....Idk maybe I was thinking about the manual crossmember...
I'll be picking up a used case soon and getting a sye, and the ecgs rebuild kit with chain.
It comes with a standard chain though, are the HD ones worth the extra cost?
This all will bring me around 650$ so not too much over budget.
Maybe I can even use my bootwerks linkage on the 231. They look identical on the website.

I have zero experience with electronics beyond wiring speakers and basic on/off switches. I was about to throw in the towel on this, and then the diagram suddenly made sense out of nowhere

The 242 does indeed hang down further than the 231.

Have 2000 Jeep Cherokee Classic. Replaced Battery. While battery was out I noticed 2 wires running down between the battery location and the metal frame that the radiator is attached to. These two wires passed through this framing and at the end was a round (and kinda cone shaped) 'thing'. It may be a sensor? It may be ???? Does anyone know what this is?
It is made to snap into the frame with a brass or steel or copper spring ring when it's pushed into the hole.
Could not find anything on the forum, yet, I have no idea what to call it.
Is there any place that has a layout/diagram/drawing of all the wiring under the hood of this vehicle?
Can it be bought? Searched and downloaded?

That's what I thought!
And good link. I'll have to figure out the cost. I need to do a sye though as well so I'll have to choose whatever is easiest on the pocket book
