Will the front driveshaft from an '00 durango match the front shaft from an '00 cherokee?

The part in that link is for an '81 - '83 SJ Cherokee. It won't fit in your '84 XJ.
I did see a few universal units there, though. Just enter your year and engine size to view them.

I don't know if this will help, but here are the OEM part numbers for your year:
------------------------------------
SENDER PACKAGE, Fuel ***
Gas, Carbureted

20.2 Gallon Tank
1984-85 ....... 5300 1249

13.5 Gallon Tank

1984-85 ....... 5300 1251
-------------------------------

ill try here before i post a thread. my search hasnt turned up anything.
did a head gasket swap on my friends 89 xj. all back together except for no coolant in the system yet. we have tried to fire but get no start. cranks, have fuel, have spark. tried messing with the cps but to no avail. i can here it actually fire on a cylinder or two durring the crank but it wont fire up and idle.

yesterday i thought it was valve lash, but with a little research i discovered you cant actually adjust them. everything is back togther how it should be. my mind is just warped on this. while we had it appart we also did dist cap and bug, wires, plugs.

suggestions?

If the O2 sensor doesn't change the problem, where are the shift solenoids?

My other thoughts are that your o2 sensor is bad / shorted, you have a bad ignition coil or plugs/wires, or your CPS is failing when hot.

Whatever it is you are definitely experiencing thermal failure. Do you have a check engine light? If so it could tell us a wealth of information on the issue and what could be causing it.

my first course of action would be to disconnect the o2 sensor electrical connector for the next trip you take and see if the problem goes away. Your CEL will be lit, but it should tell you if the o2 sensor really is the culprit or not.
I've replaced my coil, plugs, and wires but I'll try the o2 sensor and see if I still have a problem. Also, my check engine light is not on.
