Yes. In the Dana 30 the differential carrier that the gears physically install to are different sizes. 3.73:1 and up ring is taller. 3.551 and lower gears will not install into a carrier of that size.

Well, according to the time book it's supposed to take ten hours, or at least that's what a shop would charge @ $90.00 t0 $100.00 an hour. There's $1000.00 I will save and not being a novice, should only take me two weeks to get her back on line. If anyone knows anything special I should know, I would appreciate the input.

I would not recommend doing this job without the factory manual.


Edit: Recommend an OEM cam (dealer). You will also need new lifters. The old ones cannot be reused on a new cam.

Don't recall where I saw the tip. You cut the head off a couple bolts and make a slot in end for screwdriver. You use them for assembly alignment dowls. Don't recall if there are long and short bolts. If there are you cut the longs and place them in the short holes. And don't place them to far towards rear, to hard to get out.

Default Rear axle wrap?

Just bought a 99 xj which I am very happy with, however I noticed the passenger side rear wheel is not centered in the wheel opening like the driver side. It's pushed to the Back almost an inch from the back of the opening. I also hear a loud clunking. Unibody is super straight with no visible damage. Is axle wrap a common problem on stock springs?

I'd take a look at the leaf springs first. My '01 had breakages in all 8 springs (both sides combined), and the missing steel measure up to more than 2ft altogether.

If one doesn't look much worse than the other, check to ensure the shackle (where it pivots in the rear) isn't pinned up against the unibody. That's called shackle inversion, and I haven't seen it on a Cherokee, but it's common on old Wranglers.

Finally, it's possible that the centering pin for that leaf pack has broken, and it's allowing the axle to move forward and back under the springs. Again, I haven't seen that happen on a stock pack without lift, but it's possible.

It's not the shackle and the centering pin is still in. I guess my wife wasn't crazy when she said it was sagging to one side. I am hoping it is the spring that is causing the axle to be so far back on the one side. On the plus side I explained that we could just put that money towards a lift instead and she thought it would be a good idea

Another possibility, though also extremely rare for a stock cherokee, is that your spring perch on the axle has three positions instead of one for the axle centering pin to go into. It should only have one, but just in case, check to make sure that it is in the center and not in a different hole.

It sounds crazy, but just to rule everything out, you might want to check.

Not really a cherokee specific question, but I just put MT/Rs on my xj a month or so ago and I'm seeing some concerning wear. I haven't done any hardcore wheeling yet, and my driving is probably half pavement half gravel roads. What do you guys think of these chunks missing from the lugs? Anyone else had similar problems with these tires? Maybe I'm just being picky but I feel like they shouldnt be doing that

Weird starting issue. So on a cold start, the engine starts right up just fine. But when the engine is warmed it turns over a couple times before it will start and sometimes I have to pump the gas a little bit. For example, If I've been driving for a while and stop to get gas, it won't start as quickly once I've turned the engine off to pump gas. Any thoughts? Maybe a fuel injection issue or a clogged fuel pump?
