I have a question maybe yall can help me. Been trying to track it down for a while but its occurrence only happens under load.
01 xj auto 4x4. When jeep goes from 3rd to 4th gear, I get this metallic rattling noise when about 2kish rpm. If I ease up on the accelerator, it goes away. It isn't always speed dependant. Usually shifts into 4th at 45 mph. In N and P no noise. Only under load. I've googled and what I've seen is this happening on manual transmission. No issues stated for aw4s.
Thanks in advance. Tried to be as descriptive as possible.

Noise had been there for probably 80k miles. As for where. Hard to say. Not easy to diagnose since it only happens when under load. I mean I've ensured is not pulleys. Heat shield. Changed TPS under someone else's experiences.

Did you go over the wiring harness yet? O2 sensor high voltage is a short, either sensor or melted/chewed harness. Normally 12V heater circuit gets dumped onto the PCM input to trigger that.
IIRC CMP wiring are in the same harness. Passenger side up to the firewall, by dipsticks

TPS is an easy "check"...Drag out the Ohm / Volt Meter (a Logic Probe & Ohm Meter and I can cure most anything)...3 wires going into TPS..find the one reading about 1.25-1.50 Volts (usually middle wire)...Key on test..slowly and smoothly open Throttle Plate ...meter should rise smoothly to around 4-4.5 volts...look for irratic jump in voltage....if it has a bad spot and jumps from one reading to much higher reading during Throttle opening test discard and install new one (works for any make or model 3 wire TPS..If the noise has been there for 80,000 miles, it's not the "Sprag"..I've seen a busted fin in a Torque Convertor raise heck that long (same symptom)..If noise is coming from somewhere else, then a good start would be..check motor mnt's ..look for loose shield and tin on the Torque side of engine. You can also try "Power Braking" it at full stop..might show up then..The only real for sure test is a unit called the "EAR" headphones with lead to amplifier box and 6-8 test leads coming out..you clamp them to various spots on engine, frame, etc. and have someone drive car...by switching **** on box, you can hear each individual spot..also works well for chassis issues, engine knocks, axle bearings, etc....costs about $65.00-85.00 Ebay or Amazon. You WILL find it with this device.

I need a good weekend to poke around again. Things I thought that were loose the first time around didn't fix it. Heat shield. Fan clutch contact, etc. I'm going to inspect the sides of the engines and tranny again for good measure. I'm hoping others had this issue and maybe have found something about it

Hey so my 2000 jeep Cherokee has been making some weird noise when I accelerate from zero. It sounds like a knock coming from the bottom of the truck. It only happens when I hit the gas from a stop. Put a 3.5 rubicon lift on about three months ago. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. I dropped the t-case an inch. No sye but I don't get any vibes. So any clue what that noise is or what I should do! Thanks

When noise started way back when, I did some troubleshooting and noggin pokin and came up with nothing. It went "away" for a while, as in didn't hear it and I worked the peddle so as not to stress the gear going up hills. I'm on 32s now and it doesn't happen every time you hit 4th gear but rather going up hills from a slower speed, I know sounds weird but morning brain can't configure sentences sorry, or when I have to get up to 55 mph from a red light. Both times its once the tranny shifts to 4th you hear the "nails in the coffee can" sound.

May be a Torque Converter issue.
While you're poking around pull the inspection cover from the bottom of the bell housing and see if it looks like something was scraping. Also check the bottom bell housing-to-engine block bolts for security. Uppers too, if you can see them.
