XJ Ask the Question Thread
I'm not sure how to start a new thread but I have a few questions about a build I want to start doing soon. I have a 99 xj that I want to swap a 4bt cummins into. I want to install a turbo also but with the swap I want to have a manual transmission but I'm not sure of what tranny to go it. Any ideas and suggestions let me know.

Lols, you guys are great.
Sorry to throw another question in the currently unanswered pot. But I recently got some used 31x10.5 duratracs and figured I'd have to get a 33 tooth speedometer gear, but when I compare my GPS speed to the speedometer it's only off by like .5mph at 62mph...old tires were 30x9.5 and I don't remember being much off. Should I put in the 33 tooth gear anyways?

New question please
2000 Grand Cherokee, ran fine all day. went out this evening, ABS and brake lights came on. Interior lights, A/C, turn signals and power windows would not work. pulled over and when I placed it in PARK, very loud screeching noise. put it back in DRIVE, screeching stopped. drove to gas station, same screeching when put in park, turned off ignition.
A few minutes later, started it up, all lights, signals etc worked fine, no brake warning lights, and no screeching noise. Does anyone have any idea what would cause this please? Thank you!

4bt cummins
4 stands for 4 cylinders.
B stands for the series it is.
T stands for turbo.
So no need to add another turbo.
Next thing. Save up about $900 and contact advanced adapters. They will be the company who makes the adapter plate, flywheel, and clutch assembly.
Get ready to weld. A lot. Even though the 4bt is a super low hp motor at a little 105gp and a really not that impressive 265 talk it is almost 900 lbs compared to the 4.0 at a weight of 500 fully dressed, you will need to reinforce the unibody completely. You will also have to get heavier springs up front. Not sure if motor mounts are manufactured yet so you might have to design that up too.
From feed back I have heard from random people who have done the swap is that they regret it.

the info I just posted has a link to a company that makes motor mounts and other accessories specifically for 4bt to jeep swaps. Not sure where you heard your info, but I talked a guy who drives his XJ exocaged, no doors on 37s and gets 25-30 mpg with the swap. He even said he'll do the swap on someone else jeep for 10k. Maybe some people do have problems with it but if you know what your doing and do the proper research, I'm sure it can be done correctly without regrets.

20 MPG with a 4BT and 37s? How deep are the gears?
The reason 4BTs suck for XJs, aside from their weight/size-to-power ratio, has to do with their basic design. They're a 4 cylinder, high compression, nearly 1L per cylinder. Those ****ers RATTLE.
Benz OM617 (http://www.mercedesdiesel4x4.com/, working on an XJ kit) or VW TDI (http://www.cotybuilt.com/, or http://gastodiesel.tdconversions.com/, who has a build thread on this site) are much more suitable for these vehicles.

I love the 4.0 straight six but I have had a few of them and can always get my hands on another. The one I have in my xj right now has a misfire I can not figure out. I started off with replacing spark plugs, wires and rotor. That didn't work so I replaced the entire distributor because the plate was cracked and it felt real loose. That didn't work either. I did compression test and it checked out. I'm not sure what else to do and I'm a diesel fan. I like the loud factor of the cummins 4bt and I know it isn't that impressive of a motor. The Volkswagen tdi is cool but I am a cummins fan. I'm young and don't know everything there is to know of the swap but I'm eager to learn. Why are people regretting the swap?
finally, somebody who wants to do the same thing as me! I've been doing a lot of research that I'll be happy to share with you.
