The front output is exposed to all that trash that sprays up from the front wheels, and its usually the first bearing to go bad. There is also a little rubber pad on the shaft to seal in the fluid that rides up the splines, and over time the pad can also lose integrity. After a while the front output bearing pick up dust and sand and water and ice, and then the ball bearings gall into the races and it gets a ton of noise and slop.
You have to split the case open to replace the front output bearing. Best to rebuild the whole thing while you are in there

hello, new to the forum but on my second XJ. its a 97 sport straight six 4.0, automatic. was recently having issues with it choking out and stalling along with hard starts. replaced the spark plugs and didnt stall but wanted to, still started hard. threw a new coolant temp. sensor in and cleaned MAF sensor, solved some of the problems. runs well and starts all the time. now as i start breaking the rpms drop (like it wants to choke out) and once i stop it idles above normal. thinking of replacing the fuel pump and filter located in the tank next. and just ordered new o2 sensors. any suggestions? codes scanned read Bank one lean. thanks guys

Can you elaborate on "cleaned the MAF"? XJs do not have a MAF, and the MAP is a sealed unit...
Did you clean out the throttle body and idle air controller?
i have a 91 cherokee with a 4.0 my question is i have noticed that it seems like i have excessive amount of moisture in the oil dip stick tube i check my often as i do have oil loss i see this moisture every time i check the oil what needs to done to resolve this issue

Anyone know why I have to change my oil filter every couple thousand miles? At first I thought it was just cause the jeep sat, but I've now had it for almost 2 years and still does it. After about 2k after an oil change, my oil pressure is weird, change the oil filter, and it's back to normal. Any ideas?
I use Rotella T6 5w-40, and a Wix 51515 oil filter every time.
Thanks!

Define "weird". Higher? Lower?

You should change it with every oil change in 3,000-5,000 mile intervals. It helps reduce contaminates from clogging ports and areas where without oil will damage the engine. Not changing it causes the filters to clog with contaminates and reduce the flow of oil to the engine, resulting in not enough oil being safely circulated throughout the engine. Oil pressure changes as the engine warms up and the rpms the engine is rotating at, it should change. Should be more worried if the pressure doesn't change.

Oil filter is changed with every oil change, and I usually have to change the oil filter after about 2k miles. By weird, it drops a little. Usually at a hot idle it sits at about 22psi and 42ish at speed (which is right on), but after about 2k it starts dipping to 10 to 15 psi at hot idle, and maybe 35 psi at speed. Change the oil filter, and back to normal. It's been like this since I bought it back in May 2014. I know the PO didnt use it much, so it sat. I figured the filter was filling up as things were cleaning out, but still almost 2 years later?
Today it was all over the place while cruise steady at 65mph on the freeway (anywhere from 20 to 45psi), then came back around at stayed right around 40.
