hey i just picked up a 86 xj with the 2.8 v6. first jeep with the 2.8l. it was givin to me so i cant compain too much lol. anyways my question is my buddy who owned if previously was wheeling and it overheated and started to smoke and then died. upon further inspection we found a quarter size hole at the very top of the oil pan on the drivers side. the engine can still be turned over by hand but it wont start... what happened?

What should I connect the ground wire from my aftermarket stereo in my 98 xj sport to? The wiring harness didnt come with a ground wire to connect to the stereo's ground wire.

You mean if you keep cranking on the starter the jeep will run, but when you allow the key to come back to the normal "run" position, the vehicle dies?

What does it sound like when it dies? Does it just cut off, or does it struggle for a few seconds and then fail?

I'm sure someone's going to have a better answer involving Voltmeters and wiring diagrams (which I would definitely try as a first option), but if all else fails, I'd find the closest significant chunk of metal / frame and ground to that.

Here's a chart that might be helpful -- if you can figure out the ground wire for the original stereo, you can probably splice in the ground from your aftermarket stereo.

Is the stock ground wire the black one that clamps onto the metal frameof the stock stereo itself?

Yes, you will need to have it grounded. I just brought it down to one of the a/c heater control mounting screws because I won't take them out often.

Lol so you can just wrap it around any metal? Would it be better to wrap it around the stock ground wire?

Well in a 98 idk where would be the best place, but anywhere you have metal contact will be fine. You don't need to have a huge connection because there won't be much power running through those lines. The stock ground wire would be good too because it should be already grounded, but before butt connecting it, I would put a removable connection so its easier to take the hu out later on.

The ground wire is either bolted or a female spade attached to the back of the stock radio, that will be the wire that you use for ground on your new radio

Friend asked me about a jeep they want to buy...only issue i guess is it runs hot? any idea what kind of problems this could be? I don't want to tell them to do it and it be a big undertaking. They know as much as i do about this....which is slim to none. Says the engine has been replaced due to blown head gasket? at least i am 95% sure thats what was said. Gimme some advice!

And the one running hot is said to be from the cooling system being full of crud from the last motors blown headgasket. needs flushed and maybe new componets. worth it? and does that make sense. says it gets hot after 5 miles or so.

i'd go with the one with cooling issues over the rotting floor one. Replace the radiator and water pump, flush, and you should be good.

of course it all depends how they run and how the rest of the body looks but that's what I would do.

Ok so, how can you tell if your master cylinder is bad?
How can you tell if your brake lines are bad?
Been having braking issues sense we got the car.
