If I ran out of money, could I use the 'trash lock' with the new 4.10 gears until I saved my pennies and got a locker?
the cast chunk is known as housing or pumpkin. The rotating chunk that holds the spider gears/lunch box style locker/LSD clutch packs/ring gears are known as carriers.

There's open style, LSD style, full case locker style, and there's spools.

Yes I think u can install 4.10 gears on your LSD carrier until u have money to do a locker. But you would be paying for labor twice. It might be a better idea to wait and save up money then do it once

Does it have to be the same kind as in the transmission or are they completely separate

it's the same kind. The transfer cases aren't too picky about which kind of ATF to use unlike the transmissions

To clarify, the transmission is picky (and you shouldn't listen to Chrysler).

The transfer case doesn't care if you put Dex/Merc or ATF+ in it.

Ok thanks. So if I don't know the exact type in my transmissION (recent purchase) I'm not doing any harm by adding potentially a different fluid for the TC?

the latch mechanism probably slipped. Bad design. There are a few YouTube videos that show how to fix it.

Make a fist and give the hatch a solid tap just to the right of the latch, and pull the handle at the same time

try greasing the mechanism and if that doesn't fix it then pull the plastic and adjust the latch.
