So today is a sad day, the first one I have lost an XJ, we had a hailstorm come through last Thursday and well she is totaled.
My question is do I take the full amount from the insurrance and go try and find a new one or buy it back and use what I get to start fixing her?
They also totaled another of my cars which totalled 5700 they are gonna give me 3600 for mine...
That's a lot of money for parts and to rebuild my Moyer and put the lift I want under her
Or I can take the money and and find another non hail damaged one...

Hello all, I am a new member here. I have owned a 1998 Jeep Cherokee sport since 2003 and I love it! Got it with 95000 miles and now has 262000 on it and tons of sentimental value! I have had a problem lately I thought was the power steering pump but turned out to be a dry axle U joint. (jeep felt like it was in 4 wheel drive when turning) Another question comes up though while messing with this fix I had the jeep in 4 wheel drive on the hard road just to differentiate the steering problem. The problem now is a moaning noise when driving in 4 wheel drive (starts at take off and did not go over 20mph but got a little louder with speed increase) when I put the jeep in neutral and let it coast to a stop it stops as if a brake is hanging up although this is not the problem as it does not do this in 2 wheel drive. Could the be the transfer case or the shaft to the transfer case? Thanks, Dale

BUZINGA!!!
So Colorado does allow operation with a salvage title. I never had plans of ever selling my XJ and I have been working on my build sheet to make a proper restoration job.
So my wife's Idea is to find another XJ that is either already built or another stock one that I can take my time rebuilding the way I want it built, I am leaning more toward the latter option, but would like to keep mine as a parts XJ, and the wife is having a hard time understanding why I want to take the lesser amount from the insurance company and have more a spare jeep for parts
The golf ball to racquetball sized hail beat all the bubbling on the hood broke the windshield and basically looked like my 4 year old got to play with a ball peen hammer.

As for the damage the hood/roof paint was cracked and peeling but the hail beat the bricks off it. This hailstorm caused a lot of damage to our house and the two vehicles we had in the driveway.

Ive got room for both we have a 3 car garage and driveway, but convincing the wife that the motor axles and any other spare parts would still be great and then sell the remaining body for scrap. or cut it and turn it into a trail rig.

to check timing chain, you basically just have to pull the timing cover off, you could also try listening to see if that's where the noise is coming from. If the timing chain has never been changed and the motor has high miles, then it probably needs one.

As the old adage goes that's what insurance is for. It's actually a win/win since I get a do over on buying my forever jeep, and my current DD that needed brakes and engine work (it's a Kia and I'm not Kia savvy) I don't have to deal with anymore. A plus to that is one of our friends wants it for their DD or their teenager for their first car so they offered us an additional 1500 for it. With that being said the specs I am looking for are a 98-2000, 231 or 242, and 8.25 or d44, and 140-200k miles. Gray or black interior and as little clear coat damage as possible. And I'm I'vegoing to have cash in hand and my price set at 4K. So this is going to be a fun adventure it's the first time I'm buying a car where I get to control all the variables.

Not a Cherokee question, but a 4.0 with a 5 speed manual question. My friend has a 1997 tj and I was riding with him and in 1st and 2nd it lurches really bad if you don't get it just perfect and the only way to stop the lurch is put in the clutch. What the heck is going on? Bad driving technique or mechanical problem?

EDIT: He just texted me this link, and said it was his transmission mount. He bought his from someone who really neglected it so the whole thing is rotted, he said it was a 2-3 hour fix.
