Default Alignment thoughts

Hey, guys.

Was doing some thinking (maybe it's too early for that). With alignments, you want the toe adjustment to be within 5/16 of an inch of the rear, correct? Could you theoretically get a laser measuring tape and as long as you shot your measurement in the same place as the rear, get a pretty accurate measure of toe? Something about using my flimsy metal measuring tape scares me lol. I fear my measurements would be way off. Also, when adjusting toe, I only have to rotate the coupling on the driver's side of the tie rod, right? Then both front tires will move out or in at the same time?

Thanks

Default 95 jeep transfer case

i have a 95 jeep cherokee, and wen i bought it the transfer case was busted and beyond repair so i went and bought one the same model (231 j) for a cheep price because it was in a fire and all seals and gauges were melted. so i have finaly got it all cleaned out and rebuilt and ready to put on my jeep. well the only problem is is that the transfer case does not want to slide onto the transmition. there is abt a half inch gap between the 2. my buddy got it to go all the way on and with it set to neutral it wont rotate. dunno if im doin something rong but help would b much appreciated

There are 21 spline inputs and 23 spline inputs on the transfer cases.
Also different length input shafts.

There are different length output shafts from the transmissions (mostly manual vs automatic) which require a different length input gear in the transfer case. If you have a short gear and long shaft it will bottom out early.

And your transfer case should turn in any position. Sounds like you need to do a complete overhaul. (including changing the input gear)

2000xj 4.0 AW4 242

I replaced the alternator and main wires (alternator/battery/starter/block/distribution-block) and associated ground wires with 4 gauge about a year ago. I replaced the alternator and about a month later I replaced the wires.

Since the wires were replaced, I've been hearing a tone inside the cab when the engine is around 2200 - 2400rpm and accelerating or under load - like maintaining speed up a mountain. So far, I've removed (physically and electrically) the stereo hardware (speakers, headunit, amp, etc), gauge cluster, LED interior lights, and the wireless ODBII dongle I had installed. The tone doesn't change. It also happens in 3rd gear when going up mountains on the highway, but at a higher RPM. I haven't been able to nail that one down - only happens when going 75-85 and the transmission downshifts.

I'm assuming this is related to the alternator, but I'd like to rule out anything else that it might be. It isn't the worst thing in the world, but I hate having problems I don't know how to fix.

Any realistic suggestions?

Alright man, you've got me confused. I know the pinion angle needs to point up. No argument there. But if the caster angle is supposed to be angled forward, what is the need for extended LCAs?

Factory angle has the caster angled backwards:

Yeah I was confused. Sorry for misleading. You are totally correct.

Been a while so I rolled the Tractor Jeep into the garage and put it on stands. Then I remembered this post. lol

What kind of "tone"?

I'm 90% sure that YJ and TJ transfer cases are clocked differently.

The Wranglers have different automatic transmissions from XJs. They shipped with the 30RH or 32RH. They use a shorter input gear than the AW4 requires.
