Same here, got the 231 and I'll shift up to about 18mph no prob and my jeep hasn't given me problems yet. That's shifting in 4hi while I'm in D. 4lo is a totally different story,

But if this poster kept doing it to much you can misalign the linkage a lil. Or if he doesn't have enough fluid. I wanna get more info from him... Not sure where he went though

I have the N242 transfer case. I also think it's the linkage. How do I go about fixing that? thanks for your help

I figured out my prob. Everyone thought the CPS and it ended up being the battery. It dropped a cell and was sending all kinds of crazy voltages to the ignition.

Check/replace the easy stuff first guys...70% of the time, thats what it is!

Sent from my iPhone because web wheeling is cheaper...

AND WHEN I SAW INSTANTLY I MEAN INSTANTLY THE NEEDLE JUST JUMPS... wtf is it? never had this issue before... FYI the fan is running and good, its on a seperate switch and is running....

Thanks go to muddeprived for the following:
You can shift into 4-hi at any speeds up to 55 mph (according to my old manual). It doesn't have to be in neutral.

For 4-low, it's best to shift when it's coasting 2-3 mph and in neutral. I find this the easiest way to get it in gear. You can do it when stopped but you risk grinding the gears and they sometimes do not mesh properly.
