Yeah quite a show... but no code.
Goes through the sequence, back to my odometer, and then a half second to a second later, the cel pops back on.

I guess Ill just have to drive it to a place with a code reader.

Have you tried resetting your computer? Remove cables from battery. Touch cables together for 15 to 20 seconds. Your computer is now reset. Check engine light?

i have been having some problems with 4 low lately. 2 4high and neutral are fine on the transfer case but i have to wrestle it into 4 low, and then it will pop out even when going at idling speed(no pressure on the gas pedal). we were on pavement when we tested it. it is really hard to get it into 4 low, my dad had to teach me how hard to yank it at first. i have done numerous searches and found lots of great info on transmissions slipping and changing gears, but my 4 low pops out and then grinds, i havent read anything on this when searching. i figured it has probably been discussed before and thought i would post here before starting a thread.

Ok first part of this. 4lo is a pain if you don't use it often. Tick is witch it is to get you rig to a roll of about a few mph and shift tranny into neutral then shift your TC all the way through to 4lo. As the rig rolls it helps align the gears but careful not to go to fast cause you'll grind the gears. And with 4lo you shouldn't drive more than 10-15 mph I believe it is. Or at least that's what I've heard.

Congrats. If it comes back on check for codes. The next 50 times you start your XJ it will save info so you should definitely get a code then . You might have already fixed the problem, but never reset the computer.

Default low fuel pressure

I have a 1998 cherokee sport 4.0L auto. When the engine is cold it takes forever for it to finally turn over. When it is warm it will start right back up. I checked the fuel pressure, key on engine off and it doesnt climb above 16psi. . . would this indicate a new fuel pump is needed?

i can get the transfer case to shift into 4 low, the problem is it barely sticks and then will pop out. my haynes repair manual says that "gear jumping out of mesh" can be caused beetween incorrect control lever free play, interference between the control lever and the console, play or fatigue in the transfer case mounts, or internal wear or incorrect adjustments. i figuered i would check here though cus people on here have better knowledge about cherokees. i think it could be interference with the console cus the lever is all the way back and it only engages like 60% of the time.
today im going to climb under the jeep check the oil in the transfer case and check the mounts but i might also try popping of the cover around the tranfer case lever on the console and see if letting the lever go back farther will prevent it from popping out of gear.

I'm in the market for bumpers. In trying to determine if I need front tire ins. Everywhere I've read says the stock mounts are fine for light recovery. What exactly counts as light recovery? The must recovery I plan on is doing is pulling someone out of the snow every now and then.

Absolutely get the unibody tie ins. Have you ever looked what holds the stock bumper on? 3 tiny bolts on flimsy sheet metal brackets on each side. NOT useful for any sort of recovery, or even to hold a heavy bumper onto the truck.
