Thanks Dukie- i checked that first and the whole center is wiped out. my only concern about the junkyard is longevity and since they want 30-40 bux i figured why not spend a little more and get a new one. i even considered a stock replacement unit. i headed down to the yard next week anyway so i'll look for the later year model as well.

I acquired an 96 Cherokee Sport from a relative that could no longer drive, it was a nightmare, because it was not maintained that well, I am the second owner and I the first to do any tune up work on it, aside from oil changes, The one good thing it that it has very low mileage, only 110k. Now I have replaced water pump flushed cooling system, replaced thermostat,replaced, radiator, alternator, serpentine belt, both front rotors, plugs and wires, air filter,so many just neglected items... My problem is the Jeep will just die, it does it after reaching normal operating temp, it will start back up, with no problem, but it is a repetitive cycle, not just at idle, happens at speed too, I am thinking maybe a fuel delivery issue? I am planning on changing the fuel filter, dizzy cap, and rotor this weekend? It is just a pain in the butt to have to deal with, this is my daily driver, and I am not a mechanic, I just know basic stuff, I am not trying to jump in over my head, but I can change a fuel filter.. Even a pump or pressure regulator if need be, just wondering if there is a common failure that causes this behavior??

There are a few things it could be, but stop throwing parts at it just because it was neglected. Some of these parts are designed to work well past 200k miles and aren't items that need any maintenance.

First thing is to find out if it's throwing any trouble codes. Any auto parts store will do this for free (codes don't necessarily turn on the check engine light). Any stored codes will give great insight into what's going on.

Second thing, as a matter of standard practice when troubleshooting electrical issues on these trucks (or just as preventative measure) is to refreshen your grounds. There are two main grounding points - the first is a wire that runs from the battery (-) post to the passenger fender; the second is a copper strap that runs from the back of the valve cover to the firewall. In each case disconnect the connections, and use sandpaper to get the terminals and the contact point on the body nice and shiny, then reconnect. Also check the wire/strap for corrosion - if it's green and crusty it needs to be replaced.

Also a good step is to go the same thing with the battery terminals (or even better replace the terminals all together).

Report back once you have the codes read.

anyone got a clue how to fix an out of place shifter? its crooked, and its throwing my shifting way off. i have to click one and a half times back to hit reverse, and it likes to shift into 3rd from d on its own. ( yes, automatic )

i cant provide pics atm, my phone is dead. however, i can describe it better.

basically, i accidently tried to shift out of park when i didnt have the key in ( had a moron moment ), and as a result ripped the shifter out of its proper place. if you take the center console off you see the shifter mechanism, gold colored, and you see that when you push the button on the shifter it pushes a little lever down allowing you to freely move the shifter along the half-circle track. well, the part that moves along that track has become crooked, at a slight angle from what it should be. i've tried to push/pull it back into alignment, but it wont budge.


actually, i googled it and found pix on jeepforum that better explain it. scroll down to the first pic with blue and red circles on it. that thing under the blue circle is what im talking about.

either that or he banged it up good on the trails lol. Jk. I know the most ive ever got into my tank was 17.679. Sucks its a 20gal and it cant get that high.

thats def something not for the average rider. Ive also seen writeups for an oversized gas tank. 32gals. Kills your clearance though
