Do the front and rear gears have to be the same for using 4-wheel drive?

Absolutely they need to be the same...unless of course you want to grenade your gears/axle/transfercase.

Did you change the fluid? It probably has water in it. Take the cover off and inspect the gears at the same time.

See if you can hear the fuel pump prime up when you turn the key to on (not start). It will be a slight humming sound coming from the gas tank that lasts about a second. It may be better to have a buddy put his ear down there as you do it. Ufc you don't hear anything then your fuel pump is bad. Also out could be your electrical system. Check to see if your plus are sparking.

Check the maxi fuses under your hood.
Do you get a check engine light?

THANK YOU!

I kind of figured I would need to do both - because both are locked together in 4wheel drive mode.

I appreciate your taking the time to reply, thanks again

Could also be a bad EGR valve. I had a bad EGR and I replaced it and it solved my problems so far "knock on wood". Does it only die when u slow down or at idle if it does I'd bet it was a bad EGR valve.

Fluid was changed when bearings were done. I really wish the mechanic poked around a little more while he had it open. Not going to that guy anymore! I wish I had the time to do it myself, but its my dd.

The 1991-2001 4.0L engine does not have an EGR valve

yea take it to someone else. Any mechanic that knows what he's doing will be easily able to figure out what's causing your issue and be able to fix it.

Default Why is my A/C comp on all the time??

I am in the middle of the Cherokee overheating fix: flushed system, new thermostat, new rad, new elec fan. and now I notice that the a/c compressor comes on even when I have selector set to defrost!! and then elec fan kicks in constantly and engine runs too cool (just off bottom of gauge). I am a first time cherokee owner and this vehicle is making me nuts! even after all this work i've done, it still runs hot in city on hot days with a/c on ( it will get up to the red zone) I really like my jeep but its just not appreciating all the blood, sweat and tears ... and $$ I have put into it lol. thanks for any advice.

The compressor is supposed to turn on in defrost. It removes moisture from the air so it can defog the glass. You might want to verify that coolant temp sensor is working properly. It controls the electric fan.

Default Rocker panel Backing plate?

If anybody knows a thing about the rocker panels and the body work around that area, please take a look at this thread.

I know I need knew panels, but do I need a new backing plate as well? or will I not know until I get under there?

Default Check engine code P0138

These are the Possible causes of a P0138 code.
- Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1 harness is open or shorted
- Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1 circuit poor electrical connection
- Faulty Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1
- Inappropriate fuel pressure
- Faulty fuel injectors
- Intake air leaks may be faulty
- Exhaust gas leaks

And these are the Symptoms- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- High Fuel Consumption
- Excessive Smoke from Exhaust

Sooooooo....... All I have is the light on and a small exhaust leak at the crack in the collector. No High fuel consuption or smoke. Starts and runs great.
What are the chances it's just the exhaust leak?

Talking 1997 Laredo

Hi I am new to this forum and new to Jeep ownership! We just bought a 97 Laredo with 186,000 and have just a few problems, the main problem we are having is that it dies when we are sitting at a stop light or sign. Runs fine all other times just when we stop it dies! Any suggestions on what the problem might be??

I would look into a new fuel filter. It's cheap and anyone can replace one.
By the way, welcome to Cherokeeforum.com. Congrats on the jeep.
