It started with a broken transmission crossmember bolt.
I was trying to remove it with bolt extractor and now the extractor broke inside and is stuck.
I tried drilling it but this pos is freaking tough....my drill didn't even cut.
Pls help, my transmission is held by only 3 bolts now

I have read about a lot of issues with Jeeps getting stuck in part-time 4WD and the different ways to disengage. My issue seems to be a little different.
I have a 1998 Cherokee Classic with 4.0L and with a shift lever to switch from 2WD / Part-Time 4WD / Full-Time 4WD / 4WD LO.
I drive 25 miles home from work in 2WD, truck performs perfectly. I never touch the lever to switch from 2WD, yet, when I come out of my house in the morning and start the truck, the part-time 4WD light is on and the truck is actually in part-time 4WD. I can feel the lurching associated with that mode when backing up and turning. To avoid that, and in an attempt to not drive on dry surfaces in part-time 4WD, I pull the lever up from the 2WD drive position, past the part-time position into full-time 4WD and the truck shifts properly into 4WD. While driving to work in full-time 4WD there are no highways so I do not get over 50 Mph in full-time 4WD.
Aproximately, 10 miles into the trip, I can move the lever back, past the part-time 4WD (it never actually goes into part-time) and back into 2WD and it works perfectly. If I attempt to put the truck into 2WD anytime prior to the 10 mile mark it will only go into part-time 4WD. Anyway, I get to work, shut the truck off, work all day and come out and the truck is still in 2WD as expected and functions perfectly all the way home. I come out in the morning and the whole process begins again.
I get where I am going and this little game is amusing, but I fear i am causing some long term damage.
Has anyone heard of or experienced this issue? Are there any easy fixes or things I can check?
I am pretty handy but I am no automechanic, I can do a brake job, maybe even replace a water pump but know nothing about transfer cases, linkage or transmissions. Is this something an independent garage would be able to handle or is a Jeep dealer a better bet? Winter is coming and i need to get this doped out

Tow / Towing Package - 1997 JC Sport 4x4
I'm a newb of the first order. I've never posted to a blog...ever. I'll apologize up front for any breach in thread protocols. To make matters worse, I'm not mechanically inclined.
Proud owner of a 1997 Cherokee Sport 4x4 4.0L V6 Automatic. Was considering having a hitch installed to facilitate hauling a teardrop or pop-up trailer (1500 lbs or less - as I understand that this is about all my Jeep could handle). My primary concern about proceeding arises from an experience last year while returning from a camp out. With the vehicle interior fully loaded (nothing on the roof rack, nothing towed), and heading up hill, the Jeep began to overheat. I shut off the A/C, and after a few minutes the temp dropped quite a bit rapidly. Never had an over heating issue before or since. In reading online I see that overheating is a concern when hauling. I've seen mention of a transmission/oil cooling system that was part of the factory tow package (that I don't have).
Does anyone have an idea what the cost would be get a hitch + tow package installed? Bearing in mind the added expense for labor, since I'm not sufficiently skilled to do it myself. The hitch seems easy enough - its augmenting the cooling system(s) that has me concerned.
Advice (and patience) appreciated!

I'm sending it to an auto shop once i put the jeep back together....the cost of running to the store for different drill bits, tool and time spent and frustration is not worth it since i found shop that "claims" they can.
Thx.

Sycoglitch - Thank you! Learning more every moment. Now I know the difference between V, I, & Flat , very cool!
Searching info on transmission coolers raises a couple more questions. Is there a difference between a transmission cooler and an oil cooler, or are they one in the same? Also, Plate-fin versus Tube-fin. In reading, Plate-fin sounds more durable, perhaps more efficient as well, so I would be inclined to lean that way. Any thoughts?

Having the A/C on while going up a hill fully loaded is very hard on any cooling system. Turning the A/C off when hauling anything is greatly advised.
If you're going to be towing anything a transmission cooler is advised for sure. Brand/type doesn't matter much - just as long as it does something to cool the transmission fluid under load. You can get universal ones at any auto parts store for <$30.
