HO engines shouldn't have a knock sensor. I say shouldn't because they are listed on the factory parts catalog, but i have never seen a knock sensor on a 1991/+ engine.

you will need to remove the grille, door handles, windshield frame, bumpers and tow hooks. All the chrome stuff.
If you put it for sale in the "for sale section" i guess there are plenty that would like to buy it.

OK. Does anyone know the name of the inlet port shown in the pic? PO i assume had broke or cut the vac line and installed the screw. I am drawing a blank though on how to get a replacement if I do not know what the thing is exactly. Guess I could just go scrounge one from the JY. But, would be nice to know. This is th 4.0 engine from a 1991 Briarwood. Maybe its not important. I went through smog check and the tech did not mention it or fail the test. Any insight would be great. Thanks.
I'm 99% sure that its the vaccum feed line for the Jeep egg and heatercore valve. I'll check when I go outside to smoke before bed.
edit: yupp, thats the vacuum feed for the Jeep egg. if you notice the piece of broken vacuum line right next to it, thats what its supposed to connect to. What I'd do is take a piece of vaccum hose and splice them together. Problem solved!

Right you are. When Jeep stopped using the RENIX efi system they also got rid of the knock sensor. I've never heard of nor seen a High Output or PowerTech(the name Jeep gave the 97-up engines) I6 with one

Thanks for the answer but i really dont have the money for a new engine right now....even though i would love to have a 4.7 stroker ive barely got enough to keep gas in the thing, im running full synthetic valvoline 10W-30 with that "engine guarintee" that im sure wont take effect because my XJ has so many miles. Do you have any idea what might help prolong it until i can get money to fix it?

You must know the three main jeep leaks:
1 rear main seal
2 oil filter adapter o-rings
3 valve cover gasket

Since you tell us that it is leaking copiously on the exhaust pipe it is 90% the RMS.
Yeah, I know the rear main is leaking, but this leak was dripping ON the oil filter, but I couldn't track where it was coming from, replaced the valve cover gasket and it didn't follow. Anyway, it's on the side of the engine and I never cleaned off the grime to check it out. I'm figuring it's the head gasket as it's on the rear half of the engine, half way up, and on the passenger side, right about where the head meets the block as far as I can figure. I can't really tell, though, the telltale "wetness" isn't defined.

I don't really want to give up on it, but since the post I've realized I don't have time to mess with anything off road related. I was going to delete the post anyway as I'm just dumping the lot of it. I'll still have my daily, though. Listed it all under "northwest" as I've posted too few times to list it proper. Thanks for the input, though. If it had been the rear main, I'd just pop a new one in. Didn't know about the oil adaptor, so that's something to look at. Is it hard to fix?

As far as I know, the biggest telltale that I use (aside from assuming it from the year (87-89.5), and the kookie overflow tank), is the double molex connector. If I remember right, it's similar to some of the older systems, but the older systems didn't have fuel injection. I can't remember right off the top of my head, but I believe one is 6 pin and the other is 9 or 12 pin. They are white and are mounted facing up on a bracket, but the bracket can be found anywhere in the engine compartment. I would hazard a guess that since it's an 88 and it's a 4.0, it's a renix. I've not hear of a non-renix in that year (but that doesn't mean it can't be, I guess)

I'd recommend getting a repair book. They (CAN) save you their worth in headaches and broken parts. I can't remember the one I'd say to stay away from as it's pretty abbrivated, but some of the manuals will tell you special specifics for each year, for about $25, and then... you will know!

Check this out for the oil adaptor leak. Was not that difficult to do.

Wow, I wish I 'd known about that one a week or two ago, if that's the problem (and it seems likely) it would have saved a lot of frustration and maybe changed my mind about dumping the rig. I'm going to do it anyway so I have the practice for my daily.

Thanks a lot!

I'm sure this has been covered before but my question is, as far as the "rhino liner" type surface to be painted onto the lower exterior body of a xj, what is better: Spray or roll on?

Planning on doing the panels where the rubber trim molding was on my 96. I'm staying away from the duplicolor brand spray (used it before on plastic and it faded and peeled even with prep). But as far as how it is applied...spray or roll on? I'm leaning more towards the roll on because of the easy application (not covering and taping a whole lot of crap).
