On the hatch. Remove the little black clip carefully and squeeze it a lil to make it a tighter fit and inspect the inside of the slot on the lift arm to see if its worn out. Hope that helps...

How exactly does the transmission on a XJ work?

When you move the lever through 2/PT/4/N/4Lo what is actually happening underneath?

How does it work? Is it just levers? is it hydraulic?

What difference does it make being in PT and why does it lock everything up when you try to turn? How is that different to 4Lo?

When its just in 2WD what is moving in the front? Is the diff still going round or are the front wheels completely free?

Sorry if we are only supposed to ask 1 question

I'm trying to get my head round how the transmission works so I can work out what is going on with my Jeep because its not right at the moment.

lol that's a lot of questions....

the linkage for the 4wd transfer case is solid links. when you move the lever it pushes a set of gears in the case to a different position on the shaft, and engages the gears that drive the front wheels.

The all the gears are turning when the truck is moving, no matter what you have selected - The front differential and driveshaft still spin when you're in 2wd. The selection of 4x4 just locks the front and rear together, and to the transmission.

The selections in your case work like this:
2HI - two wheel drive (rear) - transmission locked to rear wheels

4HI Part Time - 4x4 - front and rear locked together and to transmission - USE ONLY ON LOOSE/SLIPPERY SURFACES OR OFFROAD!!!

4HI Full Time - same as part-time 4HI, but you can leave it engaged no matter what surface you're on - automatically locks when you need traction (you may not have this selection)

N - you must use this ANY time you are towing your cherokee - disconnects driveshafts from transmission

4LO - same as PT 4HI, but uses different gear set that increases the torque ratio - used for low speed crawling and hill climbs <20 mph

What can I do with this besides put it on like it supposed to or sell it. Want to get some ideas of what I could do even if I have to cut it.

It looks like a head board for a bed. You should at least angle the outside uprights a little. Maybe peak the middle of the center cross piece. Just my $.02

I get jokes. Maybe you could do a quick paint session to help everyone out?
