But not sure which tranny I have either the 42 re or the other one. Will a trans from a 97 xj work for me? Or do I have to get a trans from a zj?
CAPS IS NEEDED!!!!!!!

HAVE YOU CHECKED KICK DOWN, AND OR ANY AND ALL LINKAGE FOR YOUR TRANNY?.

sounds like "not a tranny issue"

I can shift through 1st 2nd drive neutral reverse and park no problem but when in drive it won't shift above second so im pretty sure my links are fine. i don't know what kick down is. And caps is needed? Ppl don't answer you if you yell, you must ask nicely lol.

EDIT: looked up kickdown but it seems this is for downshifting upon acceleration. When in drive it won't shift up into 3rd or 4th.

I have a loud popping sound when I turn the wheel all the way left and when i start turning back to center it does it in the same spot. Any ideas what it could be?

Default Lift and Stock Components

Greetings, I'm putting in a lift on a 97 XJ and was wondering at what height of lift do you need to extend front suspension linkage, drop transfer, add slip-yoke-eliminator? Seems like conflicting information depending on the source. Looking at 2-3" budget lift: coils from a ZJ lift, AAL from another XJ leaf pack.

BTW thanks to all members for all the valuable information! I've been following this thread for years but this is my first post.

Thanks, XJ4AJ Jim

Ok opinion question. Would you rather have the cragar soft 8s in 4.0 bs or these http://www.quadratec.com/products/92602_4XX_B_PG.htm in 3.75 bs??? I am considering both options but idk which one I should get. So, which one would you get?

Too many variables. Post a pic of your Jeep and what size tire you'll be running.

Idk how to post pics. I will be getting 31/10.5 R15 mt tires and want to put them on a 15x8 wheel. So, which ones would you prefer? The cragar soft 8s with 4.0 bs or the cragars in with the star instead of d windows in 3.75

XJs have personalities. Some will work with you, and some are *******s. You won't know whether or not you'll need a TC drop/SYE until after you do the lift and take it for a test drive. If you need something, an SYE is the proper fix. TC drop moves the problem from your driveshaft to your motor mounts. At 3" you'll need a track bar (I always recommend the IROR Double Shear), it's good to replace the LCAs but not necessary, and don't forget to bumpstop your axles.

I generally like V5s because they're less common. Then D-Windows. Then Soft8s. But I plan on throwing Soft8s on my Comanche cause I like them better with the lines of the vehicle and the bumpers/sliders I'll be putting on. Also consider if you want gloss or satin finish on the wheels.

I've heard those trannys in zjs are complete garbage, surprised you got 319k out of it.

Anyways. I'm sure you can swap an aw4 in it... but I wouldn't know how or what to do... I would think you may need to swap the tranny control unit at least? I'd just get another zj tranny.

Or you could do the right thing... and buy an xj... haha jk... kinda.

If his avatar shows his, he's got a damn fine ZJ. He just needs to fix his trans and ditch that D35.

I think the star pattern ones would look odd on a 97+, no so much on older ones.

As far as BS goes. Its only a 1/4" difference. And 3.75 is enough for 10.50s. So go for what YOU like.
