Fix that leak asap. But make sure your not lazy and overfill the trans. That will kill it also

If you can, there is a good chance that the clutch is toast.
And 94xjohio. Sticking ANYTHING into a moving mechanical fan is not smart. And can lead to some unsuspecting guy getting hurt. Leave your smart *** comments elsewhere. People learn and get advice from this site, teaching somebody who is learning bad and unsafe methods is not a good way to teach them.

Either way... if you think your fan clutch is bad, it probably is. I just did mine when I overhauled the cooling. I recommend the Hayden cooling one.

I got that trick.from this site. Worked for me. Had exact same problems overheating. Took half of a sunday paper rolled it up. Slowly stuck in fan. Stopped it instantly. Installed new fan, used same paper and did exact same way. This time ripped edges of paper then pushed out away from engine bay.
Like i said if thats unsafe then wheeling isn't for u-especially with no cage.

Primary suspects are engine grounds and the CPS itself. Look around on here for a total ground refreshing - there are more important connections on the passenger side of the block than the braid to the firewall. CPS is of course a common failure on high mileage XJs. If you can find something to swap in I'd say go for it, otherwise hunt down a new Mopar CPS.

If the clutch is bad, it will spin freely with little to no drag.
You getting this "tip" from this site is exactly what im trying to prevent
this isnt just my method. And its definitely not just one person saying it

You can also test the clutch by getting the jeep to operating temperature, open the hood, and have someone turn the jeep off while you watch the fan. If it spins for a bit after the jeep is turned off, then the clutch is going bad. Mine spun for an extra 5 seconds before I replaced it, and most of my overheating problems went away.
