XJ Auto Tranny Removal advice
Semi newbie here , love the 91 xj i just got , but since it was only 500 bucks it of course has its issues. One of them i believe is a cracked flexplate.
Im a newb to jeeps but not to cars and trucks in general and i have removed and installed my fair share and more of motors and trannys.
I am just posting to find out if anyone has ever done this flexplate job and how long it took.
Ive done tranny removals in a matter of hours, and some that have taken days and required lifting the motor just to get it out, not to mention disassembling various other systems that are a pain to deal with.
Any experiences would be very helpful thanks so much
also its a 2wd. thanks

Took me all day but I was planning an engine swap when I found mine was cracked(flexplate) So decided to swap in a different flexplate and re-install the motor to see if the knock was still there. The flexplate was the problem so I had an extra engine which I eventually sold to help pay some of the expences.

pulling the tranny should be simple..No need to pull the engine..should be able to disconnect everything and drop it..If you don't have a tranny lift then I would definitely have a second hand to help. Plus you don't have a transfer case so one less thing to worry about.. Also make sure you have an E12 torx socket for the two top tranny bolts.

Forgot about the torx bolts. You have an easier time pulling the tranny than I did and I would use a floor jack and a piece of 2x10 to put on the jack to lower the tranny. I pulled the engine and left the tranny in place because I thought the engine had to be rebuilt. If you are removing the tranny and leaving the engine then make sure you don't leave it hanging on just the motor mounts. Put a block of wood and a jack under the oil pan to support the weight. A block of wood 1x4 between the head and the firewall may also help. A long extension (2 feet) and swivel will come in handy too.

Ditto on the E-12 socket. Sears has these.
I would also make sure you have the CPS on bellhousing removed during removal and reinstall of the trans. I'v seen these get damaged and even the harness pinched when trying to "cheat" on a CPS install.
You'll need to remove the crossmember and allow the trans to drop, get all your socket extensions together as you may need most of them. Dont lose the CPS bolts as they are shouldered, without these the CPS wont be positioned properly and you could (will) have difficulty starting it.
