late 80's to early 90's....it took me MANY months to find one at a JY. mine came from a 87.
They kind of look like a Stop sign and have a metal fill pipe plug in the middle of the diff cover.

i've heard from others on here that 8.25 is pretty darn good axle. keep it.

i think 44 parts might be more expensive because 8.25 is more common for used parts.

Tural,
You're not helping.

Dana44's have alot more aftermarket support than the 8.25, therefore the cost to build one is considerably less. The problem is trying to find one under an XJ in a JY.

The 8.25 in your 93 will have the 27 spline axle shafts. The 8.25 is considered a decent axle but the 27 spline shafts are weak and subject to breaking with heavy offroad use. The 29 spline 8.25 found under the 97-01 XJ are stronger but aftermarket support for the 8.25 in general is limited.

The Dana 44 was only available under the 87-89 models and they are getting harder to find.

FrankZ
dude, i have tried to put a cheap 44 in mine and i have come across a lot of midfield junk jeeps with 8.25. haven't come across one 44 yet. 44 is more popular for offroading, but locating a good used one is a B**ch

The XJ 44 is considered light duty and not as strong as a Scout II or CJ but a tough axle none the less. If you don't mind a bit of fab like spring mounts and shock tabs the TJ came with the same 44 as the XJ. Not all TJs have it but a good bit of them do and can be had a lot cheaper than the impossible to find XJ version.
