XJ Dash Lights Mod
#226
That looks amazing in the dark, but I hate the white background. Can I find these in a different color or black? I've looked on eBay but I can't really find much.
Can't wait to experiment with these on my XJ. If only LEDs had the same light diffusion as incandescent bulbs, we wouldn't have these weird problems with hotspots and what not. I would like to hear more reports on if you guys can dim these bulbs with the headlight switch or not!

If anyone's having trouble on older XJs here is what I have in mine so far. This is in a 92 and likely varies for 95 and 96 since they updated the gauges with the implementation of air bags.
Dash
1x 658 - high beam indicator (still need to order, so no pics yet)
6x T10/194 wedge base - gauges/turn signals/ect
?x 74 wedge base - e-brake/4wd/ect indicators (number you need will vary based on trim package)
I bought the 74s for my HVAC controls but I don't see how to change them
Misc:
3x T10/194 wedge base - both shifters and the glove box light
All of them can be changed with nothing more than a philips head screwdriver in less than 5 minutes.
When it gets dark in about an hour I'll take some pictures. Personally I wouldn't bother with LEDs for the e-brake/4wd/ect. Those bulbs in that spot are already bright and the LEDs shine through too much on them.

I put yellow/amber LED's in my gauges and shifter, but noticed one issue. I ordered 10 LED's, and I used 9 of them in my gauge cluster. I thought maybe I did something wrong, but I triple-checked the cluster and all 9 provide illumination. So I ended up putting my one leftover bulb in the 4x4 and left the transmission the regular light, as it's easy to get to. I will take some pictures later. I will say that the amber/yellow seems very, very dim compared to the old lighting. Don't get me wrong, it looks very good and I love the color, but it seems very dim compared to what I was used to. Maybe it's because the old ones were white regular bulbs and the yellow LED's are obviously a different color.

Pics don't really do it justice, though it's not as dramatic a difference with the old style gauges due to how they illuminate (from the sides rather than from behind). I still need to do the top one for the high beams light, but it spills over into the gauges so you can see the difference between the regular bulb still there and the LEDs. Huge difference on the shifters.

Cant some admin make this into a sticky?
Or at least gather all information for the different years, which bulb size goes where and so forth?
I read through all pages almost, and this thread is a mess. Same questions comes up every now and then so if we could post a sticky, that'd solve a few headaches.
Such as:
1990-1996 XJ;
Bulb name x number of bulbs - area i.e. cluster, hvac, shifter
Sounds good?
Maybe we can add some links to good vendors?

What would the size for dome and kick panel bulbs be on a 2001 xj? How about the dome/reading light? There's hundreds on eBay. Not sure which one to order. oh and the one for the glove box too.

I ordered 44mm for the dome. Later that night I double checked AFTER ordering and the bulb is completely different. the bulb has hinges on both sides. Did I order the wrong bulb?

I can confirm bulbs only for the 97-01 cherokees
5-#74's for the dash
2- #194's for the transfer case, and 4wd transfer case.
4 or 5? (depending on if you have a stock fog lamp switch) - Neowedge B (10mm) for the switches and HVAC (thank you LYKOS)
So whats the best website y'all are using to get the light bulbs from?
