AMC was building and revising this setup for decades. start with a 232 in the 60's, stretch the block and a few bits to create the 258, then do some more edits and boom a 242 4.0. The 4.0 had similar or better economy and power numbers compared to its competitors in the 80's but dang dude they made the 4.0 til like 07. Everyone else was wayyy passed it by that time.

Saying it was designed in the 60's is a good one liner to say it's literally a modified 199. please correct me some more.

I just averaged 18.2 on a 900 mile trip. 70mph. Some TN hills, and indiana flats.

31” ko2 at 26psi, 4.5 lift. Stock other than that.

I only get about 15mpg city.

My gas gauge is broken, and I have only filled the tank once. So I have to use my odometer to calculate when I have to get more gas. If I drive mostly on highways where the speed limit is 55, with lots of turns and varying speeds while stopping at intersections. Then sometimes through small towns with a 30 mph speed limit, and also sometimes on dirt roads. Would this count as city, and highway driving, or just highway since there is no stop and go traffic. Also, how many miles per tank would I get?

i would start by filling at 200 miles each time and get a gauge on how much fuel you are putting in, @evil_goat than you can go to 250 if you are only filling between 1/2 and 3/4.

i had a truck with the same issue. a Mazda 2500. i ended up being able to go to 300 per tank. i found out later that the low fuel light worked so it would alert me when it was time to get gas but my 300 mile ended up being good city and highway

Actually you're totally right. After a few days where I forgot about this thread, it dawned on me that I've heard about people doing 4.0 head swaps on their AMC Eagles (with the 258) for higher compression.

At its basic core the 4.0 is an old engine, helped out some by the introduction of port fuel injection which allows for higher compression and some other pretty peripheral improvements. I got
