Ok ... Mike37 said it best ... need to see a picture.

There is no reason that the 242 would actually be shorter than the 231. Kinda flies in the face of logic. How much of a difference are you seeing?

If you have the same years ... you should have no fitment issues other than the spline count (as previously mentioned).

measure the drive shafts on both
if they are the same length from center of the u joint caps
it will be a direct swap
you will only need to adjust the shift linkage for the TC

worst case a drive shaft the right length

If they're different trannies .. the connecting rod would be different (regardless if they are both automatics). If they're both AW-4 trannies ... no need to worry.

And don't forget to swap the gate that is under the bezel (that forces you to move the lever sideways to get into low range).

Was aware that the 304/AW were the same trans.

Was thinking of the TF (3 speed) units .... then remembered that was the older XJs. I have a brain fart every now & again.

*edit* Quick google search shows the 30RH trans from 92-01 ... but I really don't know enough about that option as I'm a firm believe in a 5 speed trans.

Turns out the 30RH is the old 904 trans (updated & re-numbered). Wonder why Jeep would just stop using it from 87-92 and then use it again?

Seems like we have some missing info floating around.

Either way ... thread hi-jack is successful.

Not sure how you quoted me saying anything about a 2wd trans.

Talking about the 30 RH trans ... that is a 3 speed auto. Which is why I suggested checking lengths of trannies a few posts prior. I am starting to lose track of what the original poster has or can get and I'm just throwing all options out in the open.

I know there are XJs out there with 3 speeds and I'm going to leave it at that. Not really in the mood to go over semantics of tranny codes and such. Seems like we'll be getting into a pissing contact over who has the most "correct" info
