It's listed as a 904 trans from 84-86 (def AMC years).

Then I see the 30RH trans from 92-01 (def ChryCo years).

I've never known the 4 cyl to get and O/D trans ... but I could very well be wrong about that. My thought was lugging from too low RPMs (despite lower gears).

Maybe I should look thru my FSM.

Talking about the 30 RH trans ... that is a 3 speed auto. Which is why I suggested checking lengths of trannies a few posts prior. I am starting to lose track of what the original poster has or can get and I'm just throwing all options out in the open.

I know there are XJs out there with 3 speeds and I'm going to leave it at that. Not really in the mood to go over semantics of tranny codes and such. Seems like we'll be getting into a pissing contact over who has the most "correct" info

that was a typing error that is now corrected
there are the small Cherokees and the large ones
and sometimes info gets crossed

no pissing match just discussion that bring out info for all to read

original poster has two 89 with aw4 tranys
the 231 they have extra will fit no problem

Wasn't saying there was one. Just don't want it to BECOME one.

*sigh* Just went through my 93 XJ FSM ... they mention the 32 RH trans now. Well .. we can't lump the SJ model into that year --- since ChryCo axed it 2 years earlier. You know .... ***** like that makes me want to close up shop and join the circus.

For all practical purposes ... in her case ... it's a direct swap. No argument there. Hopefully someone else contemplating the swap will look at all the other possibilities.
