xj's still on the road
I was wondering, in one of my passive moods, how many renix xjs are still on the road today, or maybe still licensed in the US? This will probably get a bunch of laughs, but I refuse to drive anything else. Maybe some of you feel the same way?

I would guess maybe 25-30% of Renixs are still around.
Their numbers are dwindling in junkyards too.
there is a website to see how many are left in the United Kingdom if you want to check that out.

How many are still registered for road use in North America, or in the United States alone, would be anyone's guess. However, they are dwindling in numbers as any earlier model of a given run of a vehicle would be expected to.
Whether totaled in an accident, sold for scrap because of the inability to pass local emissions, deterioration from mother nature or simply a loss of value, it happens with any make and model eventually.
I can not speak for everyone, but there is a unique following for the 1987-90 model years for sure- including Comanche pickups too. A great many of them are six cylinder engines, and a lesser few are inline fours. For me, the reasons for the fondness I have for my '87 are many. My understanding of the Renix electronic control module and my ability to diagnose and repair my ignition/emission system myself plays no small part. I have owned it for so many years that I am afforded familiarity of its systems and its parts- many I have purchased, some I have rebuilt and some I have even manufactured. I have labored many, many hours, and bleed from many open cuts and busted knuckles. In no small part plays the additional aspect that my model year was the last year American Motors owned Jeep and was branded with their serial number. It also has a small bit of family sentiment and personal memories. To a much lesser degree, the model year I have works dependably considering the abuses I have subjected it to- I do not need more power, I know its weaknesses and drive it accordingly, and I do not require the conveniences that newer models can provide. It works. It runs. And, it is mine.

The RENIX XJ I bought new in 1990 is long gone but the '89 XJ & '88 MJ replacements I have now are going strong. They're daily drivers along with my TJ & LJ. They are the only vehicles I own.
