I replaced the radiator, fan, water pump, tstat and hoses and refilled with the NAPA Kool. That was at 51,000 miles. I got rid of it with 173,656 miles. It had not overheated in all those miles. I did 3 cooling system flushes in that time and had nothing come out of the system. It made me a faithful user of it. The n.o. is still using it and it has over 210,000 now and he is using the NAPA Kool as well.

[QUOTE=Martlor13;3262535]Idk to me telling the op to putilize a 160 degree thermostat in is terrible advice. Xjs were intended to run with a 195 and 210 degrees. Just fix your cooling system to operate correctly. Where I'm at, it gets to 105 and my xj runs 210[/QUOTE

X2

The thermostat doesn't just let hot water out of the engine, it also gives the coolant in the radiator time to cool down. Low temp thermostat(or drilling) both prevents the radiator from doing it's job, and doesn't allow the engine to operate in its proper temp range.

Ok, so what YOU two are saying is DON'T listen to this goof, and DON'T run it cooler! Jeep Heads are expected to CRACK, blow head gaskets and cause all sorts of other malady's.
Take away my post and just think with an open mind about the Jeep 4.0's engineering. There are hundreds of thousands of posts by folks (since the inception of the interweb, and probably millions more before it since they made over 4 million of them..) about over heating, blown head gaskets, and cracked heads. "THEY" didn't do much about it until early the 2000's with a so called "better" TUPY head (and the "V" motors are STILL having problems since they came out). But they STILL overheat..
Also, do YOU say it's wrong for all these peeps to cut their hoods and put vents, scoops, oil coolers etc. in?
You can get on ANY JEEP SITE and read of hundreds having overheating issues WAY before MY post.. He even states that the prev owners had "PROBLEMS"

The O.P.----{{Just got a free 1995 Cherokee, super exited and glad to be on the forum! Anyway, owners had overheating problems, had leaky radiator and the vehicle has been overheated probably more than once. I just got the rig a couple days ago. Installed new radiator. +thermostat + Housing + seal + Fluid + Head Gasket Repair just in case + Water pump + Spark plugs + oil change + air filter + heater hoses. T

The Jeep is still running at about 245.

I have read so many threads on overheating and I'm still stumped. If it was you where would you start? Thanks in advance.}}

SO, what are YOU telling HIM to do? 'Don't worry, it's normal for them to run that way' (?) Maybe that's why he got it F R E E!! The prev owners were frustrated also and decided to just get rid of it versus tear into the motor and "TRY" to "FIX" it. And even HE states that he's read 'so many threads'.

Been down this road many, many times. YES, I know about keeping the coolant in either motor or rad, read Smokey's writings on where an engine 'makes' Horse power..
In addition to that, The coolant only does about 60% of the cooling with oil and air blowing past does the rest. My personal experience with any motors (electric or combustion) that they respond BETTER running cooler regardless of type (air cooled or a closed cooling system.. EVEN Marine applications!!)
Get on Evans site and call them. Talked with a Gent for almost an hour just about cooling my Diesel compressor motor. Amazing technology there!!
http://www.evanscoolant.com/

I'm just telling the original poster Ruben, what worked for me, and for UNDER $10.00!! I'm trying to HELP him get his temp down below 200 so he can get some enjoyment from his new found Jeep. And don't want him to get all frustrated thinking, 'dang' now I have to spend $$$ on a head/headgasket etc, and the neighbors are going to complain seeing me working on it, or give up and sell it (with the overheating problem)
And if he's got an automatic trans, it's most likely cooked as well, since conventional trans fluids' life is cut in half at 160* and goes exponentially UP from there.
(and I'm sure that you'd scream if I were to say that I "BYPASS" the radiator in EVERY auto trans that I have and install the biggest trans cooler I can and run AMSOIL synthetic fluid in it)
If Ruben can nurse it along, get the temps down, it's "drive-able" until HE makes the decision to go deeper or sell it..
That's all I'm saying. Run these motors cooler and it WILL live longer. Hundreds of thousands have found that to be true.

OH, one more thing.
This liquid 'shtuff' that claims to seal cracks yadda yadda is JUST TO GET YOU HOME/BASE
NOT to drive like a magic wand was waved over it and IT'S FIXED! If you read the fine print, it usually states that one CAN'T have any Glycol mixed with it. (etheline or Propoline)
It actually does more harm than good if you don't/can't get it flushed out of the system
and fix the problem.
E

P.S. I'm sorry Ruben if this thread has taken on it's own life. Just wanted to help out.

Hey, they even have a "JEEP" section

so now i just took it for a drive, stays below 210 which is freakin awesome not sure what the deal is!? as for the idling it does slowly climb ill keep a eye on it. I wish i could say what the problem was or what happened but i honestly did nothing. my father for some reason took the thermostat out yesterday to test it and make sure it worked in hot water and it did so he put it back in not sure why this would change anything but who knows maby it was blocked. back to the head gasket "repair" it was just a silly auto zone buy. i made sure it was the type that mixes with the anti freeze. I suppose i could flush it out but its only about a water bottle full of the product and is made to be left in the system it was called blue devil i believe

Yes it could have gone in with the spring facing the radiator which is wrong. And even if the thermostat isn't good, DO NOT replace it with anything but the 195 degree thermostat xjs call for

Rant much? There are hundreds of threads about overheating because people don't take care of their cooling systems. It has very little to do with the thermostat. You wantv to run your 4.0 cooler then the 210 it was intended to? Go ahead but don't give bad advice to others looking for help and tellino them to put something on that is not correct. The 4.0 is at its most effective when it is ran between 195 and 210.

They overheat because the cooling system isn't maintained , not because Jeep built them to overheat . Hood vents aren't required most people put them on for looks . I can run my AC in 100 degree heat and sit in traffic and my Jeep stays at 210 because I maintain the cooling system and change the coolant every other year . I have a 2000 Cherokee with the so called "bad" head but with 145000 no crack in my head but I would beat that all those cracked head were due to neglect and I doubt there is hounds of thousands of them that have cracked . I believe a lot of them experienced the oil leak at the block and head on the right side of the engine and just took it for granted that the head was cracked . Not one person that I personal know that has a XJ with the bad head has ever had to change the head . I believe 160 is too low of temp to run at but to each his own , also you don't need a larger trans cooler unless pulling heavy loads .

So I fixed the AC yesterday in the 90+ heat we had in Chicago land area. Put the relay in.... fixed the AC and all was good, used the ac and noticed it get a little hotter, decided to be dumb and go downtown in the traffic and it "overheated" it did not get in the red and no light came on I just pulled over before it got that bad. So turned around and went home, on the way home I disconnected the AC relay and all is well temp went down to a little over 210 while idling. so my question is what is the issue with running the ac? more load on the engine? i should also add that when blower for ac and compressor are turned on my voltage does drop quite a bit. am I running to much at once?

by the way as the original post said pretty much my entire cooling system is brand new

With the AC on the auxiliary fan should come on every time the compressor comes on.
